My opinion:  this bike falls into the category of 'bigger is not better'. At 650/750cc this would have been a bigger winner. Where I live, there is an insurance break at 750cc. Above that, these new Triumphs don't have the performance, but all the weight of larger, better bikes, but you pay the higher insurance.  Modern 650/750 Bonnies would have sold out easily, every year. YMMV! 8-)

ps: high value/perf for few dollars is my fav:  Yam FZ07 !!!!!

what about the T100 series?

Title: Re: any triumph fans?

for the same money/lower weight, a Duc Scrambler!!

the Ducati Scrambler's aren't the same styling

I would have got the SpeedMaster if it was belt drive instead of Chain.   So I got my Sportster.  ::)

love the look, but gotta agree with it needing to be a 650 / 700

I believe the larger cc engines provide more torque and the ability to ride with less shifting than the smaller 650/750 bikes....and a higher top speed and more relaxed engine at highway speeds.

The Rockers were challenged to do the ton on their 60's era Triumph 650's, and bike owners today expect more performance when they spend this much money.

One of the local old guys has a newer Triumph that he's put over 15K on. When I see him, I'll get his input.

Title: Re: any triumph fans?
Post by zipidachimp on 12/26/15 at 11:34:49

as a former owner of a BSA Thunderbolt, 650 was plenty, 750 would have been paradise. At that time, the Vincent was 1000cc and rare, Norton was 750, Honda became 750, and then Kawasaki opened the door to popular large displacement bikes with a 900, and the escalation in displacement was underway.  But the mass of riders, harley excepted, did well with 500/650 bikes. Highways were no problem with my thunderbolt. Admission: I've never owned anything larger than my 650, and never felt the need, so take my rambling with a grain of salt.
Cheers!  8-)

thanks old indian, I'll check back.

zipidachimp, I appreciate your input. What new model cafe styled Triumph's are 750's?

Title: Re: any triumph fans?
Post by gizzo on 12/26/15 at 12:35:49

Yeah, I'm into it too. Beautiful.
My 2c- if they'd made a new triumph in smaller capacity it wouldn't sell so they have to go big. People would just complain its too small, too slow and all that. Like the W650. That's an 800 here now as well.
The Enfield GT gets canned mercilessly by straight line heros in the peanut gallery, who've never ridden one, for the same reason: to small at 535cc, too slow.

I'd have the Thruxton, but would have to choose between that and the duc scrambler and guzzi v7  8-)

I think it would be a great "Day Trip" bike.....but for long rides you would be better off with a windshield and bags for your gear.

gizzo, I went hunting for reviews on the Enfield GT, and the vast majority make the same claims, the quality is not there for the asking price: https://youtu.be/uDsWyiAbCJQ

Title: Re: any triumph fans?
Post by gizzo on 12/26/15 at 13:28:06

You're right, but most reviews are by young flakes who have no experience with singles, classics or old tech. Of course it's not keeping up with a 600cc crotch rocket. They have no other single experience to compare the enfield with, and they test new bikes. The enfield need a really long break into give it's best. My GT shook quite a bit when it was new but by 2500 miles it smoothed out and now it's not really any worse than the Savage. Not bad for an uncounterbalanced single. I've done lots of long rides and it will cruise at 70mph all day. Overtaking is a chore though. Not much power in reserve, for sure. I've already measured it up and if the Enfield engine breaks in a big way, i can fit a Savage engine in there  8-). A triumph twin will fit, too...

Title: Re: any triumph fans?

it's the "hipster" crowd gizzo. I agree, but comments like cheezy/cheap and looking at the controls, I start questioning country of TRUE origin (china??).

if it breaks, you get an instant upgrade by pluggin the s40 engine in there  8-)

Title: Re: any triumph fans?
Post by zipidachimp on 12/26/15 at 13:49:17

had no money when the W650 came out or I would have one. The RS Shadow was something similar, but heavy. The Guzzi V7 would be a good choice, and now I've got the money, but also arthritis in my knees, so love my feet forward S40 hotrod and my Vulcan 500. 8-)

A little ways back I was looking to get a basic Bonneville, so I did a good bit of research.  They are extremely reliable, very smooth, often described as having linear throttle, with absolute terrible suspension.

Here is a comprehensive review.

'rat: Royals are made in India. There is a dealer in Phoenix who has a couple you can eyeball, and I know a guy in Kansas who bought one last summer..      My back won't take the riding position of a café racer, although I know of a couple back roads that would be a blast.....

The controls and switches are made in India. That's no better, and possibly worse, than China but there it is. The majority of the bike is reasonable quality but some is rubbish and the assembly was really sloppy. Needed lots of pulling apart, loctite, new fasteners. The engine is nice , tinware suspension and brakes excellent.
I wouldn't recommend anyone buy one tho, lest I be blamed if they were disappointed.
But I love it.

Saw a new 500 Vulcan the other day, looks nicer in the real than the photos.

Here in NZ a brand new S40 is $NZ 8500, cheapest RE, the Bullet is $NZ 8795. If I wanted nostalgia, I'd buy a 1950's bike.

Title: Re: any triumph fans?
Post by gizzo on 12/26/15 at 17:26:55

Fair enough. But I couldn't buy a '67 250 Continental GT in Australia. + I really CBF looking after another high maintenance classic. Its nice to have a bike you can just get on and ride.

Title: Re: any triumph fans?

That's why I brought an S40.

Title: Re: any triumph fans?
Post by DesertRat on 12/27/15 at 06:41:11

gizzo, the last time I had controls like that they were a nightmare. Bought a couple inexpensive import atv's for the kids and had those types on them.

I like the RE styling, but to drop that much money and still have to "repair" the suspension and torque the nuts and bolts????

If it was a used bike, I'd be okay with repair and maintenance that I had no idea whether or not the PO had performed. I'm still finding "issues" with my S40.  ;)

The Tank Shop must be doing something right: He asks to be contacted by real mail if the phone isn't answered, has a 40 week waiting list (!) for new jobs and is still able to sell them at a price which will put food on the table. Well played, sir. And good to know there are still people out there prepared to stump up for quality work instead of chasing the cheapest option.

I have to ask. How long does it take before you start feeling fatigued leaning over when riding one of those?  I'm guessing you feel it between your shoulder blades.

Best regards,

Title: Re: any triumph fans?
Post by gizzo on 12/27/15 at 22:30:58

It depends. If you go fast enough (60mph+ I guess), the wind takes your body weight. Around town, my wrists get tired after maybe 40 min, but it's easy to take your body weight with your core muscles and legs for as long as you need. Also depends on how low the bars are, of course.

the suspension on new Triumphs is only poor if you compare it to modern day sport bikes, it's on par with everything else in it's price range and it's much better than the 2 inches of travel that Harley gives you on some of their sportster models.

the NEW NEW Triumphs are looking really nice, the Street Twin (replacing the base Bonneville) looks awesome,

http://ridermagazine.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/12/Triumph-Street-Twin-beauty-R.jpg

the new Thruxton R with the 1/4 fairing and upspec suspension is beautiful, it's tank looks more like the chrome tank you all love,it's not exactly like that but it's in the direction.

http://https://krazeddotnet.files.wordpress.com/2015/10/triumph_bonneville_2016.jpg?w=748&h=421

And despite the addition of water cooling, they've lost like 40 lbs.

oh and there's a 1200 cc option for the Thruxton and Bonneville T120, and if it wasn't for the spokes, I'd be seriously considering the T120 to replace my 2010 Bonneville.

the T120

Best regards,

Actively squeezing the tank with your knees automatically shifts the pressure from arms to torso, but yes, you can get sore between the shoulder blades until you get used to it
street twin = Drool
T120 too

Title: Re: any triumph fans?

Do you ever get used to it?  It would be a costly mistake to buy one and realize you have no desire to ride it after about 30 minutes.

Best regards,

Title: Re: any triumph fans?
Post by Art Webb on 12/30/15 at 07:40:51

Yes and no
you do get used to it, and the soreness goes away, but poodling about around town for long rides at low speed will always wear on you
Around town the cruiser shines
On the highway and especially in the esses, the sporty bike is more fun
Me, I like standards, aka UJMs, but not the ones with too many cylinders (any more than 2 is too many)  ;D

That same thought was in the back of my mind when I was converting my Savage to a Cafe' bike.  I was concerned that I was making a bike that was not comfortable to ride.

The suitability of the seating position sort of depends on the bike, your size and shape, etc.  My Cafe' bike conversion was not too bad and I could ride all day long when we were on the Dragon runs as we would stop every 100 miles to fuel the bikes up and that gave a bit of a rest and allowed me to stand up and stretch regularly.  The RYCA seat is very thinly padded on the edges, and I found the clip on's were angled down a bit too far and made my wrists tired.  This year I had new seat upholstery made and I welded bars for the clip ons that rotated up 4 degrees to make the bars a bit more flat....and it has helped to make the bike fit me better.

If you are in poor physical condition and have aches/pains that bother you daily.......it could be a riding position that would not work well for you.

Pretty much all bikes are heavy pigs now compared to yesteryear
Some exceptions, S40, Rebel, other small machines, but the big ones have mostly gotten bigger, at least in the US
