Basics out there first. Riding a '96 LS650 with close to 20K miles. Raptor pet, and versy adjuster are the only mods.
The only recent problem has been a busted gasket, which has been fixed and the bike has been running great since.
I'm not very electrically savvy, and I think my new problem is in that direction.

So I was headed to an appointment and stuck at a red light. The light turned green and so I started going. I get halfway
through the intersection and promptly stopped going, which isn't what I wanted to do. I push myself over to the shoulder,
make sure nothing is on fire or missing, turn everything off, and try to start it. Nothing.

I give it a minute, because I still have hope for this world. Check the fuel level (fine), make sure the kickstand switch isn't
sticking, etc. Try to start it again, and again I'm greeted with nothing. Nothing trying to turnover, nothing trying to start,
just nothing. I've checked the battery and it has a charge. I put a new wiring harness on it a few months ago.

Any ideas guys?

did ya check the fuses?

how did it die? suddenly? loss of power? with a backfire?

i have had TWO similar experiences with my s40 both times it was one of the white speed wire bundle connectors coming undone just enough so the bike would not run or turn over one was to the ignition switch the other to the starter/decomp relay. now all 20 or more of these things are zip tied using the 2 and 1 method .one on each side of connector and one ziping the two together ..to add they looked fine to the eye so i guess you start by pushing them together and see what happens small zip ties are your friend

Verslagen. Yeah, it seemed like it just turned off. No backfire.

Serow. Gonna be a long couple days, at least I don't have a garage to put everything I take off. haha.

Thanks for the tip Hotprops, I'll have to check those areas out.

Great idea along with some dielectric grease in the connectors.

Do you have lights? If not, there is a connector under the tank that has been known to cause this.

Being winter, I haven't done anything until recently except glare at it in dismay.

But I've been doing some checking and I found the orange-white wire that has everything to do with ignition was messed up. Fixed that and I can at least get lights on when I turn the key. Problem now is that when I hit the starter, the igniter assy clicks, and then all the electronics die. Sounds like a fuse from my limited experience. Thoughts?

Probably should have mentioned that I checked that and, unless I did it wrong, it read 12.48, which I understand is plenty.

It may be fine when not under load. Sometimes that 12+ volts will drop to single digits when the battery is going bad and placed under a load.

Auto Zone can load test your battery for free but I don't know if they can do MC batteries.

put the voltmeter on it, hit the key
alternatively try jumping it from a car battery (car NOT running)

Did it starve for fuel? I had that problem. The screen behind the float valve was blocked with grime, and it would run until the float bowl got low; then it would die for lack of fuel. Let it sit long enough to get a little gas in the bowl... rinse...repeat. Took a while to find out what was wrong. Turned out that one of the screens on the petcock tube had fallen off, thereby letting garbage into the carb, hence the blocked screen.

Cleaned the carb a little while back, that shouldn't be the problem.

I'll do some more checks on the battery and see what happens. Thanks

Did you make sure to remove the entire float valve? That screen is behind the valve. I had the carb apart once as well, but I skipped removing the float valve, and the problem remained. When you do, take care, for that thing is sometimes difficult to remove.
