Title: Engine Temperature
Post by pg on 12/18/15 at 15:32:28

I am curious to see what the average engine operating temperature is for a savage.  Does the fluctuations in in temperature have an adverse affect on the cylinder?  How does the rear cylinder of an air cooled stay at a reasonable  temperature.  Also, how about the liquid cooled engines.  I have been reading up on this lately and wanted to get your thoughts.

Best regards,

I could swear I read an article on this site where someone had put a pyrometer on their Savage. . . was it Dave???

Proper V twins have the front cylinder laying down and the rear one standing upright. Both get good cooling this way.  ;) You know what I mean!

I can assure you my favorite v-twins are proper!  The cylinders are at a 90 deg angle and they are both out in the wind...engine mounted longitudinally.  Guess which ones :)

Bot beat me to it with some cool a$$ pictures.

I was gonna get my fluke out and take a temp reading, go for a spin and repeat.

But, Bot gots the data  8-)

Yes, Moto Guzzi got it right, too  8-)

harley got the engine layout pretty much right, they just stuck it in the frame the wrong way round  ;D

When I had the Trail Tech Vapor on my bike, it had a temperature gauge.  I mounted the sensor on the left rear cylinder stud, as it is impossible to mount it under the spark plug on a Savage.

On most back road riding in the summer the head temperature was around 240-260 degrees.  When I hit the interstates and was cruising at 70mph the temp would get up around 280.  A few times when oldfeller or MMRanch  took me through downton Pigeon Forge on 90 degree days and in stop and go traffic the head temperature could get up to 300.

When I switched to the Kawasaki pulleys and got my rpm down at cruise, the head temperature dropped about 20 degrees from what it was with stock gearing.

Dave, with the pulley swap did the temp change in stop and go traffic?

And folded it up too much so it shakes like a dog pooping razor blades.

Probably not.  The temperature change after the pulley change was a result of the engine turning lower revs at highway speeds  (70-75 mph).

Interesting thread.  My other bike is a KLR 650 which is a water cooled dual sport.  I was reading that it is designed to operate at a temp of 160.  A lot of the seasoned KLR guys put on a by pass so the operating temp is a constant 195 degrees.  They say it gives the cylinder a longer life because their are no fluctuations in temp.  Compared to an air cooled engine, the changes in temp are really insignificant.

Best regards,

I did a laser thermometer reading awhile back.... but there was a thread about Hot Cases.....

Well, I did say 'pretty much'  ;D
