OK I'm looking for a .5mm/.020 O/S stock piston and quality gasket set for my 2001 with 18k miles on it. Anyone have for sale?

Will the head and jug come off with the engine still in the frame? Please say yes! :o

not easy, you'd be better off not trying.
you'll end up damaging the head bolts.

I have to ask....why are you going with a stock oversize piston?

If you need to bore the cylinder....a Wiseco makes a really nice upgrade in the power department, and the price is only slightly more then the stock piston and rings. The only negative with the switch is you will need to run premium fuel....about a 1/2 cent a mile cost increase at the current fuel prices.

Checked Wiseco and they don't list a slug for the Savage. Not sure if the wrist pin lines up on their 96mm. Does the piston level at TDC or will it hit the valves?

So has anyone tried a Wiseco 96 or 97mm and what are the results? Is it smooth and reliable? I don't want the cylinder wall too thin. I don't want it to start using too much oil too soon. Mostly I don't want a temperamental pregnant dog.

The Wiseco piston we use is from the early DR650 Suzuki. The height, width, pin size etc. all work with the Savage...the only issue is the smallest bore available is 95mm - so it does require the cylinder to be bored.

Several folks on this forum have the Wiseco, and it works fine in the 95mm, 96mm or 97mm sizes.....you can't go bigger than the 97mm.

95mm is 666cc, 96mm is 680cc, 97mm is 695cc.

I have the 95mm in my bike, I have put 6,000 miles on it, and it does just fine so far. It makes a noticeable power improvement. I don't believe there is any reliability or longevity issue.....the stock piston is most likley cast and the Wiseco is forged.

True it's not listed on the new lists, but it has been in the past.
wiseco dr650 (I've forgotten the years) 95, 96 and 97mm work.
I have a 95, and several people have 96 or 97.

But, why, at that mileage, does it need to be repaired?
And how is the cam chain?
And, if you're gonna put a bigger piston in, wouldn't you also want to change the cam?

I just got the bike and it uses oil. I don't know it's history of abuse or neglect. Also the head leaks oil so I have to pull it to fix that. As far as the cam and rockers no noise up there so I hope they aren't trashed.

A wiseco 95mm forged piston sounds good.

Have you changed your oil? Did you use Rotella T?
Mine
Used oil
When the oil needed changed and particularly when I ran it hard .
Leaky plug doesn't require a head pulled.
All kindsa stuff leaks and can be repaired almost free, short labor.
Pictures, explanations, questions..
You'd be surprised at how much money and trouble can be saved by asking how to solve a problem here.

Obviously you need to fix the oil leaks. The Savage engine goes though a bit of oil if you ride at 70+ mph speeds for extended periods - even with a good piston/cylinder. Slower speeds and the bike doesn't use much oil.

A cylinder/piston swap is very time consuming, and not very cheap. If the bike was not run low on oil or overheated, the piston/cylinder is pretty durable and youzguys has 140,000+ miles on his and the cylinder head has never been off. If you do need to do piston/cylinder work, it obviously is a good time to do an upgrade to a Wiseco.
