Man, I've chewed on this till my brain is sore.

Howizzit that the whirly bird roof vent doesn't let water in?
Even if it is not spinning, and it's pouring buckets straight down,
I just don't get it...

My guess is:
a) if it's raining lightly, the design of the vent allows rain to drop into the fins and it trickles down to the base and runs down onto the roof.
b) if there is a driving wind with the rain that would blow the rain into the gaps of a stationary vent, well, it can't, because the wind causes the whirlygig to rotate thus keeping the rain from getting in. The rotation of the fins hits/catches the rain that tries to sneak in sideways, etc.

Well, I'm still trying to grasp how something so obviously Not waterproof can sit up there and not let water in,
I'll bet that a water hose would get right on through.

Think of a rock swinging around on a piece of string.

Think of the strong circular curve shape of the vents as they spin --any rain drop that collects on the vent is going to run to the highest apex of the vent and be flung off.

Look at a side view of a stationary turbine -- you cannot see any light through it because one vane overlaps the next. To light or rain the globe is a solid form because it is moving a circular pattern all the time.

And yes, mist and droplets can get driven inside the things by the wind, but since the wind also drives the circular motion it tends to be self-defeating.

Those whirly bird vents are only half the picture. Air is drawn to them from vents elsewhere on the building creating air flow OUT the whirly bird. In essence the whirly bird part is the exhaust and the other vents are the intake.
There is actually quite a draft coming out of those so no water gets in.
