Title: Dang.....
Post by raydawg on 11/29/15 at 08:28:57

Been surfing CL for a possible truck.
Not that I need one, but ya know, just because.
I already have a 4X4 Ranger to drive in the snow, and a RWD 2006 Lariat Super Crew, to pull the boats.

Anyway, my mind was blown when I saw some of the prices of vehicles I have owned in the past, DANG!

I had a 1967 VW window bus, the one with portholes and the sliding roof/canvas sunroof.
I had pretty much restored it, was still missing stock bumpers.
Saw one for 50 THOUSAND dollars  :o
I sold mine for around 2 I think in the 80's.

Also had a Ford Bronco 4X4 with a 400 CI motor/headers,lifted, etc...
This was the full size one, with the removable rear/back top.

Those are going for some serious scratch now.

Had a 62 Chevy Super Sport Impala, 327,all the fancy trim, etc.....
Can't even touch those.

I am surprised to see that the Ford Explorer Sport Trac, first generation, which was a very cool truck, loved it, you can hardly find. When you do they fetch a pretty good amount.

My wife wants to get an old truck, like in the 50's or older, but golly, even a rusted bucket that they now say has "patina" is getting some serious scratch.

Surprised to see the Mustangs drop in price, even those like a 1965.

Do any of you ever look at cars/trucks to see where your old rides went?

when I look at the value of rides I had in the past now, I get depressed
74 Firebird formula 400
68 Plymouth Roadrunner
68, 69, and 72 Dodge darts
72 Olds Cutlass
72 Buick Skylark
68 Pontiac Tempest
then there were the old bikes.....

Sold 2 '69 Mustangs, an extra engine and parts for $2000. Can't even buy a decent engine for that now.

A friend sold his '72 Cutlass Supreme for $75.

Best car I ever had was a 78 Gran Prix. Had a 400 in it, and it made the tires chirp when it hit second. The long hood, rearward cabin, it balanced out nicely. The Rockford turn around was easy with it, quickly input a small crank on the wheel, smash the brakes, floor it, and start with the wheel, and feathering the gas, forty MPH  entrance could get through a corner.
You can't do that to a car too many times before it's tired.
Today, like Rows Gremlin, nobody cares. There's no market for them.
Maybe I should get another one. I could make this one last, and engines and transmissions have come a long way. Ill bet I could get more power, less weight, and much better MPG,
I did the Pit maneuver on a caddy with a two door LTD, spun him, caught him pushed him sideways down the back straight on the first lap of a demolition Derbyshire. Clipping cans in the road, changing lanes and not hitting the bumps, driving was a hoot. I'm Getting Stronger,,, I MAY drive again.

back in the young dumb stage of life, I bought a used 1969 C10 pickup for $750. Got in a jamb a few months later and sold it at a loss ($500) to a buddies dad.

That model is going for around $26,000 USD right now restored.  :o

I've always been into "old cars", but the prices that they are getting for some of what we, at the time, considered rolling toilets is silly....    Oh Well. Some people have more money than brains......   I include myself in that.  Show me a 1916 Indian "Power Plus" or a 1936 Chrysler Imperial Coupe ....

My old 2 door Holden Torana GTR and my 4 door one too. You'll have to Google that one. Big ups to any US guys who know what a torana is :). Sold them for not much back in the day, worth good money now.

The same is happening for the e30 BMW M3, Toyota Supra, Lotus Elise, and a number of other sports cars.

For some reason Honda S2000s are also holding their value or going up in price. I've seen a couple recently going for over $25k. New they were around $32k I think.

I always wanted a 54 Chevy 4 door (yes, I like 4 doors, and wagons)
Or a checker Marathon, which was basically the same car
I'd like the wagon model of either even more, but that's pure unobtainium

It's a real shame that anything built today out of plastic would hold it's value against a real steel vehicle built in days gone by!

I miss my first car, a '61 Comet, 4 door, 3-speed auto PNDLR on the tree, black with red interior. Sold it for $50 with cottage cheese in the oil after the head gasket went from never being re-torqued, ever.

They go for big money restored now. Those 45 deg. slanted tail lights are the business. The most kitschy, obscure car in any parking lot, guaranteed. Not bad on gas, either.

My mom had one of those, white with a 3 on the tree nanual and no power steering  :o
any time she drove Dad's car and tried to park she whipped a Uey  ;D

My first car, a brandy spanking new '71 Chevelle SS396.
Later, a '51 or '52 Ford p/u, the one with the massive looking front grill.
'76 Nova
'64 Buick Wildcat with a 401 cu engine...what a car that was, it just floated down the road at whatever speed you desired.
'76 Plymouth Fury

Now I've got a '75 Chev. p/u with a custom made 1/4" steel flatbed, it's a 1/2 ton with 3/4 ton suspension from the factory, 350 engine, 4 speed on the floor with a granny 1st.
My dad bought it new on a factory order.  He passed away in '07.
The engine has never been apart, but will be before long.  It's been sitting for several years.
A labor of love.

Old bikes ?  1956 BSA Goldstar.  Paid $800 for it and sold it to make house payments in the '90's.  Value now ?  $20-30,000  Yes, I cry.

Wow! Not a bad first car! Mine was a hand-me-down '80 Mustang Ghia that I totalled around a phone pole a few months later!

Ah, to be 19 again!  8-)

Naaaa, no way!  ;D

And the Beezer Gold Star! That was a royal ride in the day.

But Lancer can at least take comfort he is no longer futzing with Amal Monoblock carburetors and Lucas electrics with Zener diodes.

Every once in a while I regret not having the Norton 750.. And then I remember the aggravation of kick starting the darn thing...
Cost.. Yesterday the wife and I went to 'quirque and the Cosco had a new Lexus out in front ... A good thing the men's room was close.. Sticker was $57,xxx.xx !!!!!! :o
I know that I'm getting old, but why would I (or anyone) pay that sort of money for daily transportation ???????   :-?

Title: Re: Dang.....
Post by Art Webb on 12/04/15 at 09:46:27

well it's built for rich folks with more money than sense, but keep in mind that while me and you both remember when you could buy a decent new house for that, pay grades were much lower then, too
Any time folks tell me about buyin a Coke for 5 cents in 'the good ole days' I always ask how much work it took to earn that nickel back then
puts a different perspective on it
