When I purchased my 2007 some time ago, the previous owner stuffed the wrong battery in the box, with the tube on the wrong side, and the acid leaked out down the inside of the box and on to the bolts holding down the box and onto the frame and even out the toolbox. I've since washed these areas down with WD40 every couple of months and replaced the battery with a glass mat type. Is there any product I can use to permanent stop the rust? It seems WD40 just holds the line and I hope it keeps it from deteriorating. I did some research on the net and there seemed to be some general remedies for rust, but they vary and I would rather trust this forum for advice.

baking soda and water slurry apply let sit,apply more ,let sit than rinse with clean water eta clean off all that oil and stuff with solvent like varsol {paint thinner} than do above .after last step repaint with good paint good luck

yep, 1st kill the acid with baking soda.
then treat the rust with phosphoric acid, or naval jelly.
then spray paint over the treated areas.

My brand new bike from the Suzuki dealer had the battery vent just hanging in the battery box!! I plugged it in of course but at that point I vowed never to let anybody touch my bike. "Warranty be darned"
They are out there.

They also wanted $350 for the first service. I don't think so. ::)

The "wrong" battery is a common part. Any auto parts store or Walmart has it. I notched the box on my 98 specifically for the A battery, it costs 1/3 what the correct B battery costs.

Rustoleum appliance epoxy is available in a stainless steel look if you like having a shiny battery box. If not, you can also get it in white, cream (almond) or black glosses. Follow the recoat and handling times to the letter, unless you want a wrinkle finish (think 426 Hemi valve covers).

I ruined a brand new 1961 Harley Davidson 74 when the battery cooked over because the voltage regulator stuck.

I used baking soda and painted, nothing worked to eliminate the corrosion permanently, so I traded the Harley in on another 1961 Harley.

I would check around and you will probably find newer products to affect a cure.

I have a spray from Amazon that I use on the six full size batteries in my golf cart that keeps the corrosion under control.

aircraft spruce inc ,carry's a randolph battery box paint .it works very well

The baking soda neutralizes the acid from the battery - but does nothing to kill the rust. You should sand away the rough rust, use some Phosporic Acid to kill the rust and etch the steel, rinse properly, then apply a good primer and paint.
