use baby food jars or canning jars for nut and bolt storage. screw the lids to a 1x4 and attach it up overhead. unscrew what you need and stick it back up there when done.

could have others, just depends on how it is framed. dont forget the 'attic' area. floor it and install a drop down ladder and use it for storage too.

The best thing that I ever had in a garage was an exposed beam to hang a winch from.

The second best thing was a lot of electric outlets, and plenty of spare outlets and hooks in the ceiling to hang fluorescent light fixtures from.

My shop is 15x25. High roof, a loft, about 8x12, on one corner.
That looks like room to park. I hope you included room for tools.
The area, everything about how stuff Was when we did the shop, kept me from having design time,, and I can't get a car IN  the shop, and close the door. Well, I have, but, it requires a lot of moving stuff, Jack the car up, push,

Tools, workbench, vise, drillpress, refrigerator, shelves, for oil, filters, battery charger, anti freeze, various lubricants,,and, a board on top of the fridge, coffeemaker, cups, coffee,

That's Plenty. The pictures don't look that big to me. Once a door is up, then the eye will have something for scale.. I Am using a Kindle.

splash, this is what we did for storage solutions in our "2 car" (more like 2 mini car) garage:

Cute.

http://i1277.photobucket.com/albums/y490/mphsgal/LISA-HP/Photos/Tennessee/BigBarn_zpsda337c1b.jpg...That's the garage. 1920s built. Strategic parking can fit 14 fullsized pickups AND 10-15 motorcycles.

Also have the Model A era 2 car garage turned workshop, with 3 lean to additions, one of which is big enough to store the Class A motorhome.

You'll get there...

and the other wall is floor to ceiling cabinets:

Post by splash07 on 11/15/15 at 16:23:07

those cabinets look great, I was thinking some lockers, maybe three or four good size metal lockers. overhead storage is a must. We will have a 16' door in the front and one 9' door in the back right in the middle. But, I am planning to do barn doors on the back to save overhead space.

There is NEVER enough room... LOL... :)

Looking good so far, I have a washer dryer in mine (at the front), so mine is not really a "car" garage at all.... but the bikes are happy in there :)

One of these things is not like the other. :)

I really wanted a 3 car garage the last time I moved but it just wasn't happening with the budget and the type of house that my wife wanted. I settled on a 2-3/4 car which has worked out well but I definitely need to get my storage to be more efficient.

Post by DesertRat on 11/16/15 at 13:18:06

Yeah BSTON, me too on the 3 car, my next door neighbor has one and it's decked out with his classic cars and projects. YES I AM JEALOUS of his setup and property.

Too bad cement slabs are so dear, I've no other ideas for a surface you can actually jack a car up on
well, maybe timbers, but that could be near as dear as a slab
If I had the money, I'd have one with a car lift and a moto lift
And of course a ridiculous tool collection (actually I may have that last already, I have specialty tools for cars I don't even own  ;D)

great video there from new yankee. Plans so far include above door storage for over the garage door, a workbench, and one large standup cabinet. Im sure I will eventually add enough storage to cover all teh wall studs and negate the need for drywall. Which gets me thinking, maybe i should be proactive and add insulation behind each set of cabinets. Eventually the whole garage will be insulated. Haha

Title: Re: getting a garage (finally)
Post by Dave on 11/19/15 at 11:57:31

Insulation is a very good idea....winter or summer.

My first garage was not heated or insulated, and the soffets were vented.  We would get really cold weather for a week or two and the concrete floor would get really cold.  Then we would get a warm rainy spell, and the damp air could come into the garage through the vented soffets....and the warm damp air would get near the cold floor and the moisture would drop out and coat the floor with a thin layer of water (like a glass of ice water in the summer).  All my tools were getting rusty even if they were in the toolbox, stuff got moldy, and it took days for things to warm up and dry out.  Once I put drywall on the walls and ceiling and insulated the garage.....no more dampness after cold spells.

OSB isn't much more expensive than drywall, can be painted, is more durable in a garage, and makes it really easy to hang stuff on the wall.

Have you bought a billfold lately ?
Not only are they empty, by the time you pay for it, there's nothing to put in..

Title: Re: getting a garage (finally)
Post by splash07 on 11/23/15 at 21:00:21

oh I had to park in it when I got home. And there is plenty to go in it, more than can fit in fact. The truth of the situation is that once it is done the lady will get to park in it while my spot will get filled with furniture while we rip up the carpet in the house. its a neverending process.

Uh-Oh........you don't have any place to turn the car around in the driveway!

The slab outside the garage door looks like it tapers way too fast.....you are going to have a real challenge to stay on the concrete when pulling in/out of the garage.

It is not as bad as it looks, its pretty easy in fact to get in and out of the garage. The driveway is not that long and what you cannot see is my turnaround at the bottom of the driveway. It is a large pea gravel area I am planning to box in with railroad ties eventually. Of course its easy now when there is nothing in there to get in my way.

Just the one Moto unfortunately. Maybe one day I'll have another but I bet I'll have to get rid of one of my cages before that can happen. I'm pretty much at my limit of vehicles. Pushing for that 5th bicycle right now.

Nice, I've considered getting a 'fitness' bike (trek FX) and cycling for fun and transpo, but now I'm 20 miles from my job, not sure how feasible that'd be for work, since i last rode a bike more than a couple miles back in the early 90s  ;D
still, I expect it'd be good for my knees, as well as other fitness papameters

OK, pretty much got this thing done. Just trying to get the siding on. My contractor is pretty much done with his part, I did the soffits and fascia, my first experience with a metal brake, went well. Once the siding is in the lights can go on and then I will just need to button up the sliding rear barn door.

Nice garage! One of my retirement pipe dreams is a cozy little house for the Ladyfriend & me...and a BIG garage/shop.

Murphy's Law, part 3: "One's possessions will expand to fill the space available."  ;)

Ladyfriend & I combined households last year, & despite selling off most of my furniture, donating books & clothing to non-profits, & 2 yard sales, our 2-car garage is full of stacked boxes & totes...*sigh*..there's room for the S40 & my Virago920 "project," but I still feel like I'm rearranging deck chairs on the Titanic whenever I do a project.

One idea I have is to build store cubbies around the perimeter of the garage for storage of infrequently-used items like camping gear, and put rudimentary flooring over the garage rafters for seasonal storage (ex. Christmas decorations). Will have to wait for good weather, though...see afore-mentioned "deck chairs."

Rodger,

I put folding stairs to the space above the garage and covered the rafters with 4'x8' sheets of Aspenite.

All the junk that was in the way is now in the attic, I should wear a helmet when I go up there because I frequently bump my head.

Murphy's law of 'stuff' is definitely true, going from a 2 bdrm apt to a bitty travel trailer shows me how much 'stuff' I have I don't really need (but still haven't given up, paying storage sucks)
Ain't it something how, when someone agrees to cohabit with a ladyfriend, it's mostly his stuff that gets binned?  ;D

Honestly the main reason we westerners need such big homes is to store 'stuff'. I think a small home with a big garage and / or storage buildings makes much more sense.
My dream house is a 'Garage Mahal' with a small living quarters attached

Title: Re: getting a garage (finally)
Post by Rodger on 01/24/16 at 08:06:21

@Art...

The house I had was left to me by my Depression-Era parents. They had lived there from 1952-1996, then I lived there from '98-2014. While they weren't horders (like the nightmares you see on TV), they didn't toss anything that might be useful....as a result, I had piles of Stuff to sort through, sell what I could, donate (or toss) what didn't sell.

It was liberating, "lightening the load." I think we Americans often burden ourselves with possessions to the point that our Stuff owns US, rather than the other way 'round.

yes, we do
I'm down to 3 outfits (plus work clothes) and gym togs
it's tools / vehicle parts I can't seem to part with
also my old PC
I don't want to keep it, I'm afraid if I bin it someone might find it and backtrack into the hard drive and somehow find all my passwords
And my weights / barbells/ kettlebells

I take hard drives apart and abuse the disks. After a minute or so on the bench grinder they go to the firing range.
Even if the drive has nothing on it, there are magnets in there to get. AAAAAnd those very magnets can be put on the disk..
