Hello all. I thought I would share my bobber build with you. I have been aiming to build something like this for a while, I'm normally a Kawasaki sport bike rider - but I like to mess with stuff and there is only so much I could do with my ZXR, so I got my hands on a beaten up rusty old Savage - just together enough to base a build on, but battered enough for me to not feel any guilt ripping it to bits....

so on with the stripdown. condition was no better the further i got... newspaper fork seals anyone?

made a mess of the workshop. started grinding down and tidying up the factory welds (scrapped the filler in the end and sent the frame off for powdercoat)

roughly hammered up a seat pan to see if it would work. lowered the fork 3" (probably too much but we will see) i also ditched the rear peg lugs on the swingarm and removed the guard brackets.

bought one of those cheapo tanks and mocked that up with my new bars. also narrowed one of those trailer guards and mounted it to the swing arm.

so after messing about with the seat and tank etc.. i threw the engine in again to try out exhausts, tried an old mega but not sure on it yet. i figure i can work that out later when its a bit more together...

in the mean time i bought another one in bits. i needed better forks and a few other bits as mine was a bit past it. result, the wheel chrome was mint, rear shocks still ok, forks all good and a load of other bits i needed were in better shape than what i had. sold the frame off to a mate and kept the rest for spares.

made a battery and electrics box. mounter the start solenoid and rectifier on the back out of the way as space is a bit tight inside. frenched in the ignition barrel for a nice clean look.

then the fun stuff, my good friend has a unit down from mine, he is setting up doing custom paint and pinstriping etc so the panels started going off in his direction for paint. his work is spot on, finish is perfect and he did exactly what i asked of him right down to the style of pinstripes on the parts. while the last bits get finished up the frame is being powdercoated, hoping to start building it up this week all going to plan. new maxxis whitewall tyres need fitting to the decent rims and i think i may re make the wiring loom again a bit tidier...

Cheers guys. I use photobucket to get the pics on. Im not too sure about the chain conversion. The front sprocket is not tight on the shaft so it can slide 10mm or so on the splines. Looks like it needs some kind of spacer in there between sprocket and nut. Has anyone got any ideas on that? Tempted to go back to belt but the parts I have are really worn and the belt is almost in 2 bits

for the chain conversion you just need to put a spacer on the outboard side of the sprocket and take up the gap between the sprocket and nut. The front and rear sprockets should line up correctly then if the rear sprocket carrier is stock.

i picked up the frame today from the coaters. not the best job but it will do, i was keen to get to the workshop and start building it up so i let the less than perfect finish slide and loaded up the car.
started off fitting the new head bearings. what a pain in the bum that was. then i loaded in the swing arm needle bearings and bolted all that up.
i stripped the 2 sets of forks down and made a set from the best of both, swapped out the 3" drop spacers for 1.5" as i think i went too low at first.
bolted the rear shocks and seat on, then chucked the old beater wheels and tires on (new rubber is not fitted yet as im out of cash)

the seat has been trimmed and i got that back, the only leather the upholsterer had was light grey, i did want black so i might look at dying it darker at some point. still i think it looks ok and ties into the silvery lacework and chrome ok.
then on went the mudguard tank and headlight... i think it looks the tits, really happy with how its shaping up. i cannot wait until i get some more time on it, shame im busy all weekend cos im itching to get it built!!!!

its all coming together now. my mate had some issues with the paint on the battery box so im still waiting for that so i can fit it and sort out my wiring, the engine is in but the right hand cover needs swapping over to the painted one, otherwise its in for good. i filed up the edges of the upper fins. just need to polish them up a bit... tyres still not fitted to new wheels. im trying to find innertubes and rim tapes first. cannot wait to ride it!!!!

the engine looks pretty good from a quick check over. i took the rocker box off and cam journals seem good. just the splines on the output shaft are a bit worn so i might have to replace the shaft but all in good time...

i finally got the battery box back from my mate, poor bastard had a right pig of a job, he had to paint it 3 times due to this and that. when i offered it up i was pretty gutted to see it stands out as being loads lighter but with less contrast in the lace.

learning to pinstripe but its hard so doodled a tiki on my tool cab.

so i took the battery box out again and joe then did another few coats of tinted laquer to tone it down so we are hoping it fixes it.
heatwrapped the header pipe and threw on the mega to see if it works. i bought a load more tube so i may try a different exhaust set up and see what i come up with and if i prefer it. for now though i think its looking pretty badass.
me and joe threw the whitewalls on the bike after loads of cleaning. so happy i chose to pay the extra for them, they really set the bike off i think. shame maxxis coat them in that evil blue crap, its a total prick to remove and its still not all gone.

if i can get the video to upload of the new pipe i will, its very loud...
progress has been good. riding it around the yard was a blast. the noise is insane haha. not long til its on the road, only a few more minor jobs need doing then its mot time. i tell ya, hardest part of it is trying to work out where to put front indicators.. it is driving me nuts. :-/

Nice work with the tubing.....I am going to give that a try this winter and see if I can make a new header for my Cafe' bike.

Unfortunately - glass pack type mufflers aren't very effective at cutting the noise down on the Savage engine.....especially one that is so short.

Cheers guys. To be fair that silencer is in there for the aesthetic more than noise reduction. I had it mocked up without but the pipe looked lost under the swing arm. so in went the muffler went in to fill the gap. I had to make a heat shield up today so that will be getting polished up when my kit arrives, the pipe is gonna be media blasted. Should be a nice contrast.

she is on the road!!!! rides great, really comfortable and sounds awesome. handles much better than i expected, i gotta remember not to throw it in to the corners as hard, i'll run out of meat on me pegs if i keep that up. i'll get pics up when i get it out in the daylight next, forgot to snap it in all the excitement haha

It was a 7.5 inch trailer fender but I cut a strip out of the middle to fit the tyre and welded it up.

Looks killer, man. I do have a quick question, though; how did you do the rear tank mounts? The front is drilled through the backbone, but how did you do the mounts by the seat?

I found a rubber bush about 30mm dia. Capped the top frame rail box section and welded a piece of tube that the bush fit inside of to the frame. Chopped tank lugs off and made a tab with threaded bush and welded it to tank. Pass bolt through bush with penny washer, it tightens into the tank expanding the bush to a tight grasp in the tube.
