Title: Sputters and starts bucking then dies Post by Phil239 on 11/02/15 at 09:51:23 So about a month ago I purchased a 2002 savage with 10,000 miles. Bike was not running at the time so I rebuilt the carb drained the airbox changed the fluids and put a new air filter in. Ran good until yesterday now it'll start but if I try to ride as soon as I give it some gas it starts to sputter and buck and after maybe 2 minutes it just shuts off and won't start again for awhile a few hours is what I've been waiting between starts. Any ideas on what is wrong and how to fix it woul be a godsend this I my only source of transportation and I can't afford to go to a mechanic |
Title: Re: Sputters and starts bucking then dies Post by hotprops on 11/02/15 at 10:04:05 sounds like fuel issue look first at petcock .than nedel valve in carb and its little filter . do you still have oem petcock? see the dead shadow post |
Title: Re: Sputters and starts bucking then dies Post by Phil239 on 11/02/15 at 11:03:21 My vac line was cracked but I already cut off the offendings ends and reattached and yes I still have the oem pecock I heard vac pecoxk are unreliable before so I'll order the raptor that seems very popular here. Will let you knw how it goes once it comes in |
Title: Re: Sputters and starts bucking then dies Post by Dave on 11/02/15 at 11:30:20 And please order the correct Yamaha part.......99% of them on eBay are Chinese copies. If you don't see the white box with the Yamaha part number (5LP-24500-01)....it is not the real deal. http://www.ebay.com/itm/NEW-2001-2005-OEM-YAMAHA-RAPTOR-660-FUEL-PETCOCK-5LP-24500-01-660R-/200590318612?hash=item2eb41d5c14:m:mAwhJc2Sp5cgls4rwZu7IRg&vxp=mtr |

Title: Re: Sputters and starts bucking then dies Post by Phil239 on 11/05/15 at 15:26:10 Raptor came in today got it installed started the bike and boom fired right up, reved it hard in idle several times and runs good but as soon as I put her into gear after about 1/4 throttle she began to sputter and after a few blocks died again. Am I gona have to pull apart the carb or does somebody knw of any other possibilities that could be causin the problem? :-/ |
Title: Re: Sputters and starts bucking then dies Post by DesertRat on 11/05/15 at 16:19:39 possibly a stuck float, you may have to clean or rebuild the carb. it's NOT hard, just check out the tech section for very detailed steps. |
Title: Re: Sputters and starts bucking then dies Post by Phil239 on 11/05/15 at 17:55:24 I hope so Guess I knw how I'm spending my afternoon tomorrow, will update after the clean |
Title: Re: Sputters and starts bucking then dies Post by DesertRat on 11/05/15 at 18:07:58 to me it sounds like either a stuck float or a plugged up jet somewhere you mentioned this bike is very low miles, if you didn't REPLACE rubber parts during your initial carb rebuild, I would suggest that you do. The needle valve assembly has a black rubber pointy tip that should be sorta soft, not misshapen in any way or mashed looking, that's a bad thing. http://thumbs.ebaystatic.com/d/l225/pict/191652884383_1.jpg clean every orifice and jet with carb cleaner, go slow, be methodical, it's not a race. |
Title: Re: Sputters and starts bucking then dies Post by justin_o_guy2 on 11/06/15 at 03:57:12 Spray Berrymans B-12 through every tiny hole. And there's no such thing as too much ventilation, keep it off your skill n and OUTTA your eyes. If I can't take the project outside, I open doors, set the fan , get air, squirt, go out, breathe, but I am very sensitive to chemicals, pesticides, and other things, But, I didn't start out like that, so, keep the exposures to a minimum, don't I can take it. I'm tough. protect yourself, because you don't need poor health for the last thirty years of your life. |
Title: Re: Sputters and starts bucking then dies Post by Phil239 on 11/07/15 at 10:40:39 Finished the carb clean and replaced the spark plug while I had the tank off bike fires up mush faster now but I'm still gettin some surging and a lil bit of black smoke coming out of the exhaust. I checked my air filter and noticed the papers very dark and oil stained? Could that cause this type of issue? |

Title: Re: Sputters and starts bucking then dies Post by justin_o_guy2 on 11/11/15 at 07:08:01 Early on in the post, you reported replacing the filter. I know you had some problems, but I'm just not getting exactly what happened that messed up that filter. Maybe you don't, either, but someone around here probably has a clue. |
