Title: frozen gonads!
Post by Gus on 10/28/15 at 07:50:06

I looked at the weather on my phone this AM. Said it was to be 40s with 5mph winds. I get out on the hiway and the wind is cutting loose. Well by now I'm 3 miles from home so I continue. Winds blowing all the way to town (30 miles). I get here and phone now says WIND ADVISORY. I nearly froze to the bars man. Sheesh!

Unfortunately....we are getting to that time of year around here.

On Sunday afternoon I went for a 100 ride on the Cafe' bike.  It was sunny and when I was working on my car brakes in the driveway I was still in a T-shirt.  When I went for the ride I put on a long sleeve T-shirt and a medium weight armored jacket, my full face helmet and gloves.  About 20 minutes into the ride I was getting a chill....an hour and a half later on my way home I was freezing!  My jeans didn't seal out the wind, and the zipper vents on the jacket sleeves are not windproof when shut.

When I got home I put on a sweatshirt and insulated coveralls to finish up the brakes on my car......and it took about 30 minutes for me to warm up!

Tomorrow night there is a British Bike night in Milford, OH, and the rain should be over by then.  It will only be in the low 50's when I ride out there....and will drop into the 40's by the time I leave.  I am not sure how badly I want to ride out there....maybe I should take the car?

We've been riding on borrowed time here for a few weeks. Heck, people will be ice fishing here in another 30 days; but wait . . . I've taken my old shovelhead ice fishing before. [ch55357][ch56841]

Speaking from long experience, the best cure for a cold ride is a warm soak in a tub, warm you up in no time, just like dry socks are the best cure for wet feet
Hot soup or chilli is #2 on the list
chilli in a hot tub, that's the ticket  ;D

I'm starting to look at battery powered heated gloves.  Good ones are just so dang expensive.  Probably gonna stick with my handlebar muffs no matter how "uncool" they look.  My hands are the only things I can't keep warm for Winter commuting.  Quilted liner in my jacket, balaclava under the helmet, insulated hiking boots and ski pants for the rest of me.  May end up looking at windscreens, too.
My hands just don't warm up like they used to after getting cold.  I think I may have caused some mild frostbite on my right thumb in past year or two.
Be safe Savages!

I'll second that! I need some better insulated gloves. I'll ride when the temp gets down in the teens but, at that temperature, my hands hurt!

You guys recommend any winter gloves for riding that allows you to keep some dexterity (not too thick)?

No I  can't, I  use mittens.

I've got Firstgear TPG Glacier gloves.  I bought them when I installed Oxford Heaterz on my previous scooter and they worked well enough but the sub-freezing air moving over the backs of your hands can't be defeated by gloves alone.  These have thinner insulation in palm specifically for heated grips but that does nothing for the backs of your hands and the tips of your thumbs.  In combination with handlebar muffs, there were excellent, though.

I treat the leather every year and it keeps the wind from blowing thru them.
I imagine snoproof would do even better.

Old Rider,

It was in the 70's here in North Texas today.

I rode in my usual boots, Wrangler jacket, gloves and helmet.

When I go to the Bikini Bike Wash at the Harley shop on Saturdays I am the only guy there with a helmet on.

Helmets aren't mandatory in Texas?

I'd wear mine regardless of the law.

Title: Re: frozen gonads!
Post by KennyG on 10/29/15 at 20:15:27

If you have passed a safety course it Texas and are of a certain age you can skip the helmet.

I have passed The Riders Edge Course and I always wear a helmet. I have worn a helmet since the late 50's when the AMA said you had to wear a Bell 500 helmet if you are going to race.

I still wear a Bell 500 and replace it every few years.

There is no helmet law in South Dakota either. I wear a helmet because I got to many kids and grandkids to answer to.

Winter Gloves/dressing.
Try looking at hunting/Ice fishing items at a Hunting/Ice fishing store.

A big Motorcycle store would probably have some of the same things.
But they just buy the Hunting/Fishing ones in black (From the SAME suppliers in China) and mark them up... MORE.

If I need to dip my hand through a hole in the Ice onto the water...
I need the totally Waterproof insulated Neoprene ones.
Hunting, a wind proof Thinsulate glove.
Also there are total waterproof socks, and insulated ones.
There are various kinds and thickness out there.

Of course, there is still the ‘old’ trick...  ‘Panty Hose’.
Whitey Tighties, Panty Hose, Long Underwear, Pants.
Just adding the panty hose, will keep you a LOT warmer.

For Years, always used the panty hose material, in just the socks.
Unbelievable, how much warmer that is.
foot, PH sock, cotton or wool, light or heavy sock, (depending on temp), then boot.

And remember, Wool, it WILL keep you warm, when you are wet.
The new, gor-tex, things, Only work for a while.

I remember, 20+ years ago. After 10 hours in a field watching dogs,
(looking forward to 2 more days of doing that)
Got back to the motel,  getting ready to out to dinner with the Committee.
my roommate laughed at me !
I looked at him, and said: “Your feet got cold this afternoon didn’t they”.
He sheepishly nodded. I threw him an ‘egg’, (that's how they are packaged).

He wore them the next two days. And still does today.

Post by Gus on 10/30/15 at 14:01:36

The panty hose thing is an old one and works very well. When coupled with old fashioned long johns you can stand nearly anything. The best thing is; they do not restrict movement. I am also a. If believer in wool!

Title: Re: frozen gonads!
Post by Kris01 on 10/30/15 at 15:41:07

If, Heaven forbid, I should get into a crash, I don't want to have to explain to the ER docs why I'm wearing pantyhose!   ;D

Title: Re: frozen gonads!
Post by Art Webb on 10/31/15 at 10:46:05

The ER Docs won't CARE what you're wearing or why
When I first started riding, I wore no helmet
Then Texas got a 'must wear' helmet law, and I started wearing one, a 3/4 with snap on face shield and snap on visor
One day I was behind a gravel truck and a hunk of gravel (big gravel, not pea) bounced out, bounced off the road, and cracked the visor right in front of my eye
In Texas now you can skip the helmet if you have taken the BRC OR have at least $10k worth of health insurance
I still wear mine

I think when ER doctors see a biker, they know all bets are off as far as clothing...
;D ;D ;D...

I tried the pantyhose thing (after much internal dialog),.. but they seemed to make me colder...
Maybe, they were too small?... cutting off circulation?...
(I have no idea what size to buy... they don't come in 30x32's.. :-/)...

Bot, try this, (if you are inclined to try the P.H. thing again).
Go to a, 'Mart-Mart', Go to the Woman's undies dept, act kinda, sheepish.
Someone will come up to you, (in some places, EVENTUALLY),
Tell her/(or him),   "Looking for Panty Hose, for a girlfriend.
She is just a little bit larger than I am".
"It's to put on under her long underwear, we are going up North".

I think what you tried, (you were right),
{{ OMG, did I just say that, YOU were Right ? }},   :o :o :o :o.
they were to Small/Tight.

Of course, another, 'old' trick, is Newspaper.
If your gonna stand on Ice, (Ice Fishing), or Frozen Ground, (Deer Hunting).
Put sever layers of folded up newspapers, in the bottom of your boots. That is, Wonderful Insulation, from the cold.
(At least 10 layers of paper).

And another tip on, 'Gloves'.
A Light thin 'Jersy' glove, with,  'Painter' plastic/Exam, glove over it.
Then your. 'Normal' gloves.
It is TOTALLY, Wind Proof !
(As well as, Waterproof)
And if you go to a, 'mart-mart', Hardware type store,
a Whole Lot Cheaper.

Bot,  Shhhhh,  do NOT,  tell anybody,
I  'agreed', with you. !   ;)

Harbor Freight sells them "doctor gloves" pretty cheap, I buy a few boxes a year cause' I don't like to get my hands dirty anymore.

And they do make good insulators against the cold.

I wondered how they'd work. Trouble is my hands sweat so bad in them. We use them at work a lot.

Seems like Bohn Armor would work as well as panty hose. Haven't tried them in the winter yet, just got them last summer. They would be a lot easier to explain at the ER. Or they may keep you out of the ER.

The trick is.... to put on a thin pair of cotton or nylon gloves, then the vinyl or nitrile glove over them, then your main pair.
Of course your hands feel like balloons, but they will be warm :)

So..... If you ride a Savage you can get away with wearing no pants or shoes? That sounds reasonable. :P
Aboutthe winter riding gear. You need to buy proper winter gauntlets for riding. Good ones have armour in the right places and usually a visor wiper on one finger.
Has anyone tried pure merino wool thermals? They are amazing. Pretty spendy but when you've used them you realise they are so worth it.

I have worn merino wool sweaters for undershirts in winter for years. They last a very long time and if you catch them on sale in spring they can be bought for $15- $20. They are very lightweight, warm and not in the least itchy.
