Title: Temporary baffle ?????
Post by raydawg on 10/11/15 at 08:45:38

My dyna baffle is gone, or mostly gone. I noticed it got louder, and fluctuated, and just sounded different. I pulled it off and debris came out when I tilted it up. A loose part was still sliding around in there, and trying to dislodge it, I lodged it more, about half way through, though I can still see daylight around it.
I have another on the way, but it will be next week or so before I get it.
Is there as safe method to temporary quite it down, or?
Any ideas folks?

Thanks

It would probably be cheaper (and more effective) to just replace it.

Yes, but it's almost the same price as a new (used) dyna, amd won't get here any sooner than the one ( new whole muffler)  I bought on Ebay....
Which is about a week shipping time (estimate)

Thanks Kris

The Dyna muffler has a blocking plate in muffler that forces exhaust through the perforations in the inner tube and into the muffler shell. This plate is held in place by an interference fit with the inner tube. They have been known to come loose.

Pull the muffler, and drive the old plate out using something like a broomstick. Pick up an automotive engine freeze plug (size 1-3/4 I think) and drive it into inner muffler tube. It should sit in the middle of the perforations in the inner tube.

I'm often temporarily baffled. Okay, I'm rarely NOT at least temporarily baffled.

I tried pounding, got most of it out, but one piece is stuck solid, won't go back out, I thought I might try some #4 steel wool lodged against it till I get the new muffler, but it sounds ok, a bit louder, but doable....until I get the new one. I just don't like people thinking I am a poser  ;D

Thanks

Oh, I see now. You're needing something ASAP until you can really fix it.  ;)

go for some SS pot scrubbers instead.  they won't burn as quick.

Totally random fact of the day (not helpful at all):

Light some steel wool. It'll burn like the 4th of July!

Raydawg:

If you like that muffler....I can rebuild it.  I made cutters that I can used to remove the DYNA baffle.  I can weld in a new core....and can make it more free flowing than the original.  It is a lot of work however....and you can get a replacement much faster.

The green stripe of tape shows where the metal is inside the baffle that forces the exhaust out the holes.  The black baffle is the stock DYNA, the silver one is the replacement I made.  I made the bigger baffle so a neighbor could use it on his Volusia 800.
