Title: Installation of rear wheel
Post by darthesteban on 10/09/15 at 17:53:58

Hi all, I took off my rear wheel to replace the tire and did so successfully, but when I put it back on, thought I did it correctly, whenever I pick up any speed, something in the rear starts violently clicking and I have no idea what it could be.

Since that is not a typical problem, we have no , well, I have no, ready answer.
But, we can help you figure it out.

Can you tell which side
Have you done a real close look at everything? By close, I mean looking up in where the brake support slides into the slot on the swingarm, checking out the belt guard, feel of how the rear pulley moves, look at the tire, is it centered up or did you mix spacers up,,
does it make noise rolling in neutral, is it noisy because of speed or acceleration,

Fat spacer to the left, skinny to the right.
check your belt tension.
check your wheel alignment.
check tire clearance.

I'm thinking I just mixed up the spacers now that I got a closer look. Putting this thing back on was a pain in the rear ha, can't wait to do it again! Thanks guys!

Make sure you got the right-side brake hub, into the slot that holds it on the swingarm...

How do I increase belt tension?? It's super wiggly and I assume it needs to be tightened.

Step 1, read this (http://suzukisavage.com/cgi-bin/YaBB.pl?num=1279564397).<<<hidden link -v1   8-)
here's the basics:
with the axle bolt/nut loose, loosen the locknuts and tighten the belt tensioner bolts that stick out the back of the swingarm.  Read the link I included to know how tight to make it.
Be sure they are adjusted equally and that the belt tracks when you spin the rear wheel.
Don't forget to re-tighten the locknuts and torque your axle to specs.

This is one step I've never bothered with.
if the belt is the correct tension, you can get the axle out.

"Shiny!..."
"Yeah,I don't think mine was that sparkly on the showroom floor."

Well, it's not for lack of riding!
Bike only had 2400 miles when I bought it last year (~400 miles/year?!).  It's ready to turn 10k now  ;)
I do wipe it down every now and then.  Maybe it's just because it gets to park in a garage both at home and at work?

If keeping everything lined up and in place while you slide the axle in  gives you grief, try fitting it all loosely with a dowel a bit smaller diameter than the axle. Is easy to get that in there, holds the hub, spacers and stuff in place and slides out as the axle slides in. Good luck with the ticking thing.

What size dowel?

bit smaller diameter than the axle

I'd take the axle to the hardware store, and if you have a grinder, taper I it a bit.

I did that once.   :-?

Do I need to clarify? I'm not saying taper the axle,
I never even considered trying to pull the axle without messing with the belt tensioner.. dang, all that hassle I could've dodged.

yeah I got it, I wouldn't taper the axle.

Thanks for the idea Justin.

My dowel is 5/8" because that's what was hanging around when I needed it.
