Title: Master cylinder bleeding
Post by laukinis on 09/28/15 at 06:49:38

Hi everyone!
I have strange issue with Master cylinder or brake system , My 96 savage front brakes just gone. I removed cylinder and found than it is broken, changed to used one from GS500 . Trying to bleeding it but  after few pushes of lever, fluid stops to flow. I do everything by manual and samples of you tube. But something still wrong. No pressure and flow of DOT 4.
Master cylinder is identical and not broken, fits great.
Can you giveany advice :-?

Getting a dry MC to prime is a hassle. Easiest way is open the bleed screw and apply vacuum. A quart jar, two pieces of brass tubing, available at the hobby shop, soldered into holes drilled in the lid. Hose to vacuum on the engine , hose to bleeder. If you still have the stock petcock, put it on Prime.

Hallo Texas :)
I will try this tomorrow to vacuum it,
few hours ago I and my father double checked a Master cyl. and its works great when  BRAKE HOSE is removed from mas. cyl. brake fluid flow is strong. And then system is connected no flow again. Then with Syringes pushed fluid from bleed screw to master cyl.  until no air bubbles in fluid but no brakes again :(

Maybe the inner lining of the brake hose has separated and is closing when you try to push fluid through it.

Is the lever going down?
if it is possibly the check valve is stuck open.

If it's not, possibly some debree has clogged the outlet of the hose.

Or as steve said, hose is bad.

Yep, both can happen. If the bleeder is open, and you haven't accomplished actually bleeding the brakes, and the lever is resisting you, you'll need to get the hose off the MC,see how it acts then.
Brake fluid will hurt paint, wipe up any splashes immediately and thoroughly.

Yes lever going down. Where is that valve ?

If you fill the master cylinder with fluid.....and then open the bleeder screw at the caliper - does fluid flow down through the system and come out of the bleed screw?  (Put clear hose over bleed screw nipple and run it into a jar/can to catch the fluid.  Clear hose is so you can watch for bubbles).

I'm not very educated on the master, never had any problems with it.
So what I think is a check valve is just a relief port.
When the lever is released, the port is open.
When the fluid level is low and you give the lever a squeeze you can see fluid squirt out of them.

So, if your lever just goes down as you are squeezing it, you got bad cups on your piston.

The master cylinder is a simple pump.  When the lever is not being pulled, the piston that is fully retracted.....and there is a small hole that allows fluid to flow into the cylinder.  As you pull the brake lever, the piston moves past the small hole and closes off that flow....and it begins to push the brake fluid down the brake line.

The problem becomes that when you release the brake lever the fluid can just flow back into the master cylinder as you release the lever....and this is especially true when there is air in the brake line that is pushing the fluid back into the master cylinder.

If you can afford to buy (or know someone to borrow these from), the hand vacuum kits make bleeding brakes really easy as you can pull the fluid down through the master cylinder, brake line and caliper.

This is pretty sad....this website takes the $ 30 MightyVac and charges $ 298 for it!  Must be a website that sells things to Universities and the US government.

Or, you can have vacuum for the price of a jar, tubing, dab of solder, tubing.
Sounds like first , understanding how brakes work, spend time reading, get the basic understanding. It's so simple when it Clicks,,
But, Until it Clicks, it's just magic..

THANKS  justin_o_guy2 and EVERYBODY for so kind help :)
Finally i have perfect brakes :)
Its really like magic  ;D
first I pushed caliper's piston all way down, then with simple syringes created vacuum and last air bubbles left brakes  :D
After that pressure raised in lever, and brakes started work realy nice :)
Test ride went great :)I hit the road, came back home  ;)
