Title: "Plug/Cap" Leak?
Post by DesertRat on 09/26/15 at 08:26:10

topic locked, so my questions are here:

1. why are we replacing this "plug"? It would seem that it is part # 26 (gasket), in the diagram, that is the failed component allowing "blow-by" of oil and pressure, which is causing the failure of the cover gasket in certain spots.

2. why not replace #26 with a crush washer, re-install original "plug" with copper colored sealer and re-intall new cover gasket and torque to specs?

3. The original post is a bit vague (I've read it 3 times); what additional parts should be replaced/purchased at the same time as this "plug"? gaskets? o-rings? bolts? washers?

#26 is a copper washer under a head nut, oil pressure doesn't get there unless it seeps by the head gasket.

whereas the plug keeps oil/air pressure from escaping.

there are various other parts, but we don't generally replace them unless they are leaking.

One of the guys here machines the plug and cuts a groove for an o ring.  I don't think there's anything to buy other than sealer. Some have used RTV from the local auto parts house, but, the book calls for
a different kind. I'm glad I spent the money. I went to a little independent bike shop and got what their mechanics used. IIRC it was called Three Bond. Never got hArd in the tube, like RTV, that one little tube put the head cover on three times, and I think I used some when I had a Raptor bored out. Used on other stuff, besides bikes, too.
There is no gasket up there. The cam bearings Are the head and cover. I'm pretty sure they bolt the head and cover together and finish the cam hole.. so, you want a thin even application. Then slowly, gently, patiently start making passes, pulling the cover down on the head. Feel of the bolts, don't just go cranking on them. I've heard how cheap and soft the bolts are, maybe someone got some cheaper and softer than mine, but mine survived it being removed and replaced three times, never rounded or stripped anything.
And leave that
Retorque the head bolts
alone. That's just an invitation to an Expensive and troublesome moment.

so #26 is under pressure causing "blow-by" which in turn causes our leak?

I don't think I can explain this to you on a saturday morn without a percussive adjustment.   :o

I'm not completely sold on this repair. I believe this is not my oil leak issue:

it's dry as a bone here:

and all the way around for that matter:

it looks to be just below the exhaust head:

either I'm seeing an odd reflection or are there 2 copper washers?

Looks like your leak is coming from the head gasket, 2 washers would indicate someone retorqued it, possibly failing.

I didn't notice that until you spotted the 2 washers. The head does have a noticeable gap difference front to back. I can see gasket material toward the back (intake), but almost mating surfaces (no gasket material) showing in the front (exhaust).

*arrrrrggggghhhhhh

found the "oil leak".
Cleaned and degreased the engine.
Blow dried.
Started bike up.
Sat her up, in riding position until it warmed up.
Shut down.
Waited a few minutes and came back out to check for leaks.

leak is from the head bolt, front (exhaust):

rear is bone dry. Im guessing that while on the side stand (gravity) pulls the oil to pool on the left fins and travel front to rear during riding.

Not sure I want to tackle this repair.

Some get away with simply removing the nut.... degrease, dry and seal with high temp rtv or engine sealant....
Make sure to coat the threads too!  Hey, if you have to redo the head, might as well try this first... might let you finish the season. :D

LEAK FIXED

the front head nut was LOOSE, 12mm hand tightened
ran it until warm, shut down, left alone, came back

NO LEAK, I was blessed on this one, Thank you God.

I was not looking forward to tearing it down at all.

Thanks folks ...

This is your engine on oil...
http://images1.snapfish.com/347447863%7Ffp342%3Enu%3D323%3A%3E639%3E697%3EWSNRCG%3D32338747%3C74%3A4nu0mrj

towards the rear on the right side is a bolt that has an oil passage around it.
The seal around it that goes thru the head gasket has gone bad.
Not unusual.  I got one from the factory that's got it.
what will happen is that leak will appear somewhere else.
What I've done is remove the offending nut, apply high temp rtv to the copper washer and retorque the nut.

I noticed the oil passage sleeve in the parts break down, it looks like that nut/bolt "copper" seal is accessible through the head cover?

Never mind the above. Just noticed it's sleeved and mine leaked between the head to cylinder, so it's gotta be that passage heading up to the head cover leaking.

Rat, maybe you don't Want to go in there, and I don't blame ya, before you decide, call around, get quotes.
Read up on it. It's not really hard, it's involved, organization during disassembly is important, actually, crucial. Don't look at it as a job, but a series of small jobs.
You'll save enough on labor to buy tools and have money left over.
The manual, hard copy, or print off the pertinent sections,

A piece of cardboard with the outline of the head cover , X slots at every bolt location,
There are tricks to stuff. Notes on things,
If I'm doing a lot of stuff and the oil is out, I'll put a note on the wheel.
No oil.
Time
Wasted
on organizing and reminder notes, bolts taped together and labelled,
Just take your time,
Do try the Pooky on the nut and stud,
But, I'm not seeing that kinda screwup not require the real fix.But it's running, just oozing oil.. it's okay. Run it, read, learn, get your confidence and tools.

thanks Justin,

i have boat loads of tools, can't find my torque wrench though  >:(  think the oldest boy used it or I left it up north who knows.

I'm just itching to get it on the road, and buying used has had its previous owners issues transferred to me.

Waiting on the service manual and exhaust to come in, along with hunting for other parts.

Ha! The kids came over. I started typing hours ago. Came back and finished, without reading. Good for you, dude! Hopefully, it'll last.
