Title: No power on bike. Need help.
Post by ryan_3987 on 09/24/15 at 21:08:09

The bike coughed and shut down completely as I was pulling over. Hooked up to a new battery, checked fuses and still no power. Anyone have ideas of what the problem can be? It is a 87 with about 15000 miles. Engine was taken apart cleaned 2 years ago due to sitting for almost 15 years. No problems until now.

Ryan,

Are you certain that you didn't run out of fuel?

He says "Hooked up to a new battery, checked fuses and still no power."

I am taking this to mean he doesn't have any electrical.

No headlight when you turn on the key?  Check the ground for the battery.

Just not enough info yet.

Check the plug connections for the handlebar wires under the front of the tank.  If one comes loose, the bike's dead. The one on the right killed mine for a few minutes until I found it.  Still looked ok but wasn't completely plugged in anymore.

Will the tail light come on if you put the switch in 'P'?

I would also check the ground wire for the battery down at the engine case.

Did all my checks again and turns out my new fuse was bad also or I put the old one back in on accident. Bike is running now. Sorry to waste everyone's time and thanks for the responses for trying to help.

No worries Ryan...glad to see it was a simple fix.

No need to be afraid to post a question or problem here. Sometimes it is just the act of stating a problem and talking it through that gets to the bottom of it.

You retraced your steps. That's always good when you hit a dead end.
