Title: OEM or AfterMarket REAR turn signals
Post by DesertRat on 09/24/15 at 06:50:48

having trouble finding rear turn signals that are DOT approved and are close to original sizing. I've found tons of aftermarkets on ebay, amazon bikebandit and j&p. Im not interested in all the LED models, something using the stock single filament bulb.

anyone have a source that is NOT going to cost me $50+ per light?

As you most likely are aware....the $ 15 LED turn signals that are made in China are not DOT approved, and most are not safe as they can't be seen in the sunlight.

K&S Technology offer DOT turns signals - you have to buy them from a retailer like Motorcycle Superstore.  Here is the website so you can look to see what you want....then with a part number you can search for a retailer that sells them.

Another really good option is to buy the factory turn signals that the Sport Bike riders strip off their bikes.  They are excellent turn signals and are DOT approved.  You will have to do a bit of adapting on the wires and mounting.  Here is an example of what can be found.....look around and see what bikes have turn signals you like, then start your search.

If you are looking to purchase OEM signals because yours are broken or pitted, reach out to builders of the RYCA conversions. You'll get 'em cheep and they'll (obviously) be plug-n-play.

I only ever had luck finding the rear lights.  I used the guts from my busted rear and replaced the guts in the front ones that I purchased.  You have to reverse left to right so the drain hold is on the bottom.  Unfortunately, they were ~ $40 per light.

$33 each ( still not cheap, but are approved and are exact replacements)

These are Chinese copies of our turn signals. They are virtually identical, to the point where the OEM lens will fit on these perfectly (at least they did on my 2003 Savage). Since the lens is what calls out the DOT spec, getting these and putting your stock lenses on them ought to work. They use a standard 1156 2 wire bulb. Sure, you have to buy 4 instead of 2, but at this price they were worth it to me.

Stu, just ordered the 4 pcs sets, they aren't exactly OEM replacements, mine are more cone shaped and these are more of a ball/globe shape. Hoping they're gonna fit.

What year bike do you have Desert? Mine is a 2003 and the "cup" shape and size are virtually the same (I didnt use a caliper to measure them,,,just did a side by side eyeball).

This is a pic of the OEM light for the 2003. No "cone" or bullet  shape at all.

In 2004 a significant number of changes occurred in the electrical system.  The turn signals were changed to the bullet shape, there was a hazard flasher switch added, a headlight passing switch was added, and I believe the headlight was made to go off when the starter switch was engaged.

If you want bullet shaped turn signals....you need to look for 2004 and later.

My 05 had all that.

Boogie_with_Stu,

Ordered those lights, no way they will fit a 2006 model with the bullet style lights without major fabrication. Those mount with a 3/8" screw and nut and a very short stud. The 2006 has a 5/8" stud the is longer and is held in place with a set screw to the chrome.

Sending back for a refund.

Found aftermarket DIRECT* fit replacements on eBay and Amazon:

K&S Technologies 25-3231 DOT Approved Turn Signal - Amber , this fits LEFT REAR

K&S Technologies 25-3232 DOT Approved Turn Signal - Amber , this fits RIGHT REAR

* you will need to splice your OEM connector into these and eliminate the EXTRA wire.

UPDATE:

went out to tinker on bike.

rear signals drooping, had to put some superglue between rubber and housing, then taped to hold them in position.

Next time - put some caulking in there BEFORE re-assembly and sliding everything back together  :D
