Title: 96 Honda Shadow VTC 1100
Post by springman on 09/22/15 at 16:05:05

I am toying with the idea of making an offer on a 96 Honda Shadow 1100 with 17000 miles on it . From pictures it looks to be in great shape.

Any comments or warnings regarding this bike?

How much?

I like Honda's, good bike.
That one is a little pig at almost 600 lbs, but it will give you a good highway bike....

I road one that was around an 05 and it was fantastic!  I always hoped I might come across one that was a decent deal without too many miles.

Best regards,

Yeah, I understand that it is just under 600 lbs and also that 40-45 mpg may be considered good. The asking price is $1500.00 but I have gotten no response to my emails and there is no other contact info.

The only reason I have any interest in this bike is for the longer distance touring. Other than that I have to admit I really love the S40.

It is a 96', did they have  fuel injection back then? or water cooled?

the newer ones do.

I had a 2007 vtx 1300.... and i believe they can be had for the same price range, if you look around. After all the 2007 would be 8 years old and not almost 20 years old.

:)  craiglist/ebay are your friend.... and so is kbb :)

Trade in is 1,600 and retail is 2,500...... and that is not putting in the miles.... (shadow 1100B)... which model is it?

P.S. It is a five speed.... on long trips you will be looking for sixth.... I had a VTX 1300R.... and traded it for a larger bike, for touring... for sixth gear :).... but came back to the savage.... You don't have to go big to tour...(unless there is a woman involved).

It is carbureted, water cooled, shaft drive and with hydraulic valves. I like the looks of it better than the VTX 1300.

Well, go test ride the darn thing!

Looks good, not too many miles on it, and they do ride VERY comfortably and smooth.

Just a couple of hundred pounds heavier, but the overall drive is SMOOTHER.

I just went to the smaller bike because of a health condition...... actually i could handle that one... the frame is close to the savage.... sits low... and well balanced.

Plus, it is the same I paid for my savage! LOL :)

So are you still toying with the idea or have
you ridden it and possibly made an offer on
it yet?
I have a 05 750 Shadow that I have enjoyed
the hell out of.
I have put over 5000 miles on it since purchased
this past Spring.
It had just over 4000 miles on it.
It is a bit smaller than the 1100 yet should give
you a nice ride.. Keep us posted and good luck.. :) kim

Thanks all. Still no reply and no other way to contact the seller. Just have to wait and see what happens.

Craigslist can be somewhat frustrating with some folks.  There has been a hydraulic press listed for months....and the guy won't return my emails and never answers the phone number that he provided.  I guess sometimes the items are for sale as the folks had a crisis in their life after posting the item for sale....or they have already sold the item and have not removed the listing.

That looks like a lot of motorcycle for $ 1,500......betcha it didn't take long to sell if the thing was as nice as it looks.

Yeah Dave, it might already be sold. But if that is the case it would be nice if they would just say so. Frustrating is correct.

When I message the craiglisters, I always state "i can be there in *** minutes or a couple of hours to look at it"

More often than not, if you get an excuse back... it is a scam...

No answer, its a scam or they have sold it.

KEEP looking! :)

I have been trying to get ahold of the seller for 3 weeks now. I guess I'm not even going to get to see the bike. Oh well, nice picture anyway. :-/

You don't want that chassis style anyway. It falls in at the tail end of the "cartoon era" of metric cruisers. Like the 1400 Intruder or the Vulcan 1500A, the chassis isn't competent enough to handle the torque output.

If you truly want an 1100 Shadow, go for the next chassis generation. Get an ACE if you like the "American" look-feel-sound, get a Spirit if you like more of a muscle bike look and feel.

An 1100 Shadow can be either chain driven or shaft driven, dual crankpin or single crankpin, depending on which sub-model you choose. Just like the can't get out of their own way 750 siblings. There are only 2 750s that can't beat a Savage in a race, those being the ancient Harley 45 and the entire Shadow production run...  :)

Thanks for the input WD. I am not that well versed on the Shadow line and of course never did get to see this bike, even though it is still listed. I was expecting this to be the Shadow Spirit 1100 with dual crank pin, shaft drive and hydraulic valves. And I was going to ask a friend on mine that has one to go with me to check it out.

But since this person is obviously not interested in actually selling the bike. It don't matter no more!!! >:( >:( >:(
