Title: Is there a rebuild kit for the carb?
Post by bpearsoncfi on 09/20/15 at 12:31:21

So I'm pretty sure I need to rebuild the carb, I can get the bike to run but it doesn't want to stay running and seems like it's getting too little gas.
I've looked all over online but I can't seem to find a kit for it.  Thoughts?

here:

http://www.ebay.com/sch/i.html?_from=R40&_trksid=p2050601.m570.l1312.R1.TR10.TRC2.A0.H1.Xsuzuki.TRS2.G%7C1%7C0&_nkw=suzuki+%28ls650%2C+savage%2C+s40%29+carb+kit&_sacat=0

When that link comes up.. notice how I worded the search for ebay.

P.S.  Before suspecting the carb, try running the bike with the petcock in the Prime position, just in case the petcock is the problem.

I tried the prime position, it does it exactly the same as the regular position.  :(
Thank you for the link!!

Why is it the carb?
History..
Miles,
Mods,
Have you drained the carb bowl and looked at what comes out?
Inline filter?

Sounds like fuel starvation so I thought....carb

I bought it used, not running, 3 weeks ago.  It has 6000 miles and hasn't run for a while.  I drained the bowl and there were a couple of little black specks but nothing major.

I've pulled the carb off, one thing I'm not sure of is the plunger device in the middle.  Currently it's closing off the throat about 7/8 of the way.  Not sure where that should be.

Also, I was wondering if anyone has put an inline filter in and if that would work.  I would love some advice on that.

I've got the carb kit ordered so I may as well rebuild, anything I should do while I've got it apart?

Thanks for all of the advice and comments!! They help so much

you can do a lot just by cleaning the carb.  see the tech section for a how to.

really, you don't have to replace any parts unless you're having a problem or see one of the diaphragms are torn.  or the float valve leaks.

the slide needs to be absolutely clean, a fingerprint will make it stick.

Read the stuff. Start in with a #2Philips and it's not gonna work.

I messed stuff up before I found out.

Thanks for all of the input, I ordered the kit from the link I was given, rebuilt the carb from advice out of the tech section, and it runs again!
It doesn't sound great but it sounds really good.

You can work from there.

I used to have a BSA 350 "when I was a child". The Amal carb would put fuel down the throat of that bike no matter what, as long as it was clean.
This bike is about the same thing, one step beyond a rock, metaphorically speaking.  ;)
