Hello all! I am a new member of the site and a new owner of an '05 S40.
So I've owned the bike for 2 weeks. The previous owner said it wouldn't run and that he found there was no spark. This was true, with the old burnt out plug in it, but it sparks great with a new plug and runs and sounds good.
But...when he was trying to check the spark he just started pulling stuff from the cylinder and took out the bolt that acts as the top pivot point for the cam chain guide/tensioner. The bike was run with that bolt out although it's back in now! So here's the question, did it screw up anything to run it with that bolt out? It doesn't sound as if the timings off but and it runs fine (backfires but I see that's not odd). :-?

I very much doubt the chain could have jumped a tooth on a gear during that time. If it had, the timing would have been messed up and noticeable.
Did you check the timing marks when you put the bolt in? There is a position the cam should be in when at TDC.

My opinion.. no harm, no foul. :)

I had done a few experiments and one was replacing that guide w/out removing the head. Not easy and getting the pivot point took some doing. I hope you were able to do it.

and no, I don't think you could harm it this way as long as the adjuster was attached, the chain would be taught.

I like the 'no harm no foul' idea!
I didn't have anything off except the chrome caps so I never checked the timing marks.

Next up, get the idle right and get used to the backfire!

Really glad I got the bike 8-) 8-)

Getting that guide back into place without taking things apart wasn't easy. Had to try to 'fish' it up with some stiff safety wire enough to use tiny screwdriver! Frustrating but once it was up the tension of the chain was enough to hold it in place! Whew!!

You did good, getting that back in place.
That someone would just start taking things apart like that kinda cracks me up.
