Title: Valve issue?
Post by chasethorn on 09/08/15 at 19:26:03

I rode my bike around the neighborhood the other day and I noticed a sound that sounded similar to sucking up a small bead into a vacuum... if that makes sense, then all I did was throw her in neutral and than slowed to a stop and went back into first and it was fine but that worried the living crap out of me... I have always have a knocking in the engine or a rattle sound but is this a valve issue where I need to adjust them?

maybe, it certainly would be on the list.
the trouble shooting guide gives some common causes for noises.
you might remove sparky and see if someone dropped a rock in there.
have you checked the cam chain?

get a mechanics stetho and try to find the noise.
It would be helpful to know where you here it most.

Is it to the right side of the engine or right side of the inspection cover??

You see the decomp lever on the left side of the engine?
follow that to the inside of the inspection port.
lookie where it can hit the rocker, is it hitting?

I'm sorry I really new to this and have no idea what I'm looking at. Is this what you are referring to as it may be hitting when it goes up?

And I just rode it today. When it idles it's fine but it sounds like a BB is in the top left of the engine. Like a bb in a vacuume

And if it is hitting is it time for a valve adjustment? And also the weird buzzing bb sound was the speed o I found out. So that's a relief haha

If it's hitting, your rockers are worn out.
but judging from the amount of screw sticking up, shouldn't be the issue.

It's normal if it coming from up top.
when it's gone worry cause your valves are too tight.
and it will get quieter when hot.

I was so paranoid about it,, it took a few times before my heart wasn't in my throat for a week after. You're just going through the stage, you Know how important it is to get it right.. and the cost of messing up. If you weren't nervous about it you'd be arrogant, or oblivious...
And, there's no shame in pulling it apart and looking. Just make sure the jam nuts are snug. If you used a five thousandths gauge, then you probably can't stick one in, if you can stick the max gap blade in without loosening anything, I'd call it loose. Towards the tight end of the specs is quieter.
Note the tip of the adjuster. Over time, it will flatten and work harden.
When I did the twenty thousand mile adjustment the thing hardly needed any change.
Getting the gauge blade bent into a Z and kind of a ski tip on the end really helped me.

I want to make a comment for anyone trying this the first time.

If you find that you have to move the adjusting screw more than just a fraction of a turn.....then something is wrong.

If you find the clearance is waaay too tight and there is no clearance to get any thickness of feeler gauge inserted - you most likely don't have the engine at the correct TDC (top dead center), and you need to rotate the crank another 360 degrees to get to the proper one.  I always take my hands and move the rockers to confirm that both rockers will move slightly before I start any adjustments....you should hear and feel a slight "click" when you move the rockers.  (When the piston comes to TDC on the proper stroke both valves will have clearance - on the other TDC the cam will be at the "overlap" portion and will have both valves slightly open.......you can't adjust the valves when the cam is holding them open).

If the clearance is waaay too loose - you most likely have a bike that is wearing out the cam lobes and rockers.  You can go ahead and adjust them and see what happens - but if the clearances increase again it means things are wearing quickly.
