Title: Misfiring
Post by marekbuk on 09/04/15 at 08:36:32

Hi all

My 2005 S40 has started misfiring intermittently on acceleration - at all revs and speeds. Sometimes it runs fine for a couple of minutes and then will miss-fire and stutter! I've got an in-line fuel filter fitted so doubt the carb is clogged and suspect something electrical but where to look?

anyone had similar symptoms?

cheers

Mark(UK)

I'd replace the plug and check the plug wire.
in the end of the plug is a screw fitting make sure it's tight.

And make sure that there is no sand waiting to fall in when the plug come out.
Now is a good time to mod the right side head cover trim, so the tank can stay on.

an under voltage battery can cause sputtering also

Thanks guys - will check battery voltage first, then replace plug/check lead and do the cover mod as its a pig to remove my tank and seat as I've done the Bluecollar bobbers conversion - will let you know how I get on tomorrow

Many folks have reported problems with using an inline fuel filter.  Could be the culprit.  Try running without the filter and see if that cures the problem.

OK so this morning I removed the Spark plug and it was sooty as hell - so down to the auto store and replaced it and did the LH head cover mod at the same time (used an angle grinder to cut a slot in the cover and replaced the bolt with a stud!)
Whilst removing my bobber seat I could see the probable cause for running so rich in that my not-so-neat rewiring and positioning of the starter solenoid meant that there was a fair bit of obstruction over the stock air intake. I'd have thought that air would have found its way around the wiring but perhaps not?
I did check the filter element and it was clean but gave it a blast of air anyway.
Anyway she runs like a dream now - I also pulled out the brass blanking plug in the carb body whilst I was at it.

Happy riding and thanks for the advice guys.
