What is the proper way to remove the spark plug lead? Do I just yank it out?

Yes, just yank it out

It is recommended that you blow the crevis before you pull a plug with a wrench.

For the inexperienced.
Grasp as close to the end of the wire as possible. Protect the wire and the way it attaches to the connector that clips onto the plug tip. They can get sticky...
Blow dirt out of the area around the plug.
Get the socket on, rotate CCW,  FEEL, pay attention. If carbon is built up in any threads protruding past the bottom of the heAd, you can damage threads. You shouldn't need anything more than  a hand on the socket once it's broken loose. If you're working t to get it unscrewed, stop. Holler back.
Unless you've removed or modded the heAd cover chrome caps, you gotta pull the tank.

when reinstalling, use anti sieze on the threads and dielectric grease on the plug tip. it'll keep the plug from getting crusted in the engine and hard to remove and the boot easier to snap in and off the plug.
