Hi guys , well with all of your help my bobber build is nearly there.I want to start her up but first I need to put in some oil. Living in Ireland it would seem that it is not possible to buy Rotella here. Castrol classic has been suggested but their seems to be some doubt as to its zddp content plus its 20w50. So any suggestions? :)

Most of us have no idea what kind of oil you can get in Ireland.

You should be looking for an oil with 1,200 ppm of ZDDP, and no friction modifiers.

Depending on the temperatures your ride in, 20W-50 might be a tad thick.

On amazon I ordered some ZDDP additive.  A lot of folks get red line brand, I think I ordered eastwood.  Anyways, just a thought.

I don't know how oil is labeled in Ireland but here in the U.S. we have a label that states "Energy Conserving". You don't want that! You can check online for whatever oil you're interested to see if it is wet clutch compatible. That's the oil you want.

If you happen to find out how much zinc is in the oil then you can boost it to 1100-1200 ppm with Redline ZDDP additive.

Their is a,  AMSOIL, oil product, which has Zinc, in it, I think 1200 PPM, But is is about 12.00 a quart here.

Don't know, if that's available in Ireland.

If you can, 'Net' order. Get Rotella, and Redline.

I visited www.shell.ie they list shell Rimula oils as heavy duty diesel oils. Whether these are the same or similar to Rotella I can't say. I do note that some in the 10w-40 range are suffixed F6 whereas this forum favours Rotella T6. If you go down this path, and it would do no harm to contact Shell Ireland regarding ZDDP content stay away from anything suffixed F6E as these are energy saving. There is a site, Bob the oil guy who may help.

Look at your label again, T1 is straight 10, 30, 40 or 50, not 15w-40.

We favor Rotella, some lean T, some T6.

I lean T6.

I believe you can get Mobil 1 Racing 4T in Ireland. You can run that with no ZDDP additive.  I'm currently running Mobil 1 Racing 4T, but I don't like the price.  I'm due for a change and I've already got the Rotella T6 on the bench and waiting for the filter to arrive in the next few days.

Rotella is a "Heavy Duty Engine Oil"........it is suitable for use in diesel engines, and also rated for use in gasoline engines.

It is rated for use in motorcycles and wet clutches as it does not have any friction modifiers.

Thanks guys this is turning into a bit of a nightmare. I thought I would be able to just pop in to my local bike shop and pick up some oil. I've contacted a few companies to see what they think. Will let you know if they ever reply. Rimula is apparently not suitable. Why do you not have to add zddp to mobile 1 ? Does anyone know of someone or a company that could send Rotella over here ? Thanks again for your help

Jake, I'm in the UK and I use 'Rock Oil' semi-synthetic 10w40.

It has no 'friction modifiers' and is for use with wet clutches, so it's ideal.

I also add a little Redline ZDDP which I bought on ebay, not cheap, but you only use a small amount each oil change.

Near Limerick City but up in the hills of North Tipperary. You should come over to Bikefest next summer[ch128512]how do you decide on how much redline to add?I got this email from a specialist oil supplier.       [      People are often overly concerned about ZDDP, if you buy an oil from a reputable company, it will have sufficient anti-wear additives, whether it's ZDDP or a similar chemical. Also, oils contain the correct additives for what they are designed for - a 20w-50 for classic engines will have a higher ZDDP content than a 10w-30 for the latest Hondas.  If you really want a high ZDDP content, go for the Silkolene Pro 4, Silkolene Comp 4, Motul 300V or Red Line oils. ].

Our bikes are almost 'pre-historic' in terms of the engine design. Especially the top end, where the ZDDP will benefit most.

Off hand, I can't remember how much ZDDP to use, but it's the equivalent to a couple of caps full per oil-change.
The gurus on here will know better  ;)

The main thing is to use an oil without friction modifiers (for use with a wet clutch) or your clutch will start slipping.

My son lives in Scarriff, Clare, I spend some time every now and then in Cloughjordan, Tipp, I used to work at Crannagh castle, and used to house-sit winters in Balinure/Horse and Jockey area.
I know the pub in Moneygall which is where the Dublin/Limerick bus stops...... and where a certain man called Obama has links  ;D ;D ;D

Next year's Bikefest sounds good to me!  :)

Have you tried looking at the oils that the local farmers' co-op (or whatever it's called), worth a try.

I think I put 60 mls in a gallon of Rot.  Wait, that seems high.  Have to check when I get home  :-[

I'm over in Liverpool and when I was looking at suitable oil aviaible in the UK I came up with the following:


Mobil Racing 4T (expensive!)
Valvoline VR1 (half the price of the Mobil)

Both of the above have high ZDDP content, but if you need any more:

Eastwood ZDDP additive (ebay.co.uk)

I got really excited when I looked at vr1 really good protection and available here. But then I read that it's not suitable for wet clutches   Have you actually used it?

No I haven't used VR1 - I have Mobil T4 racing in the bike at the moment.

Had a look at the Mobil racing. Apart from the price the only problem seems to be that it might have too much zddp   1700 ppm   Is that too much?

That should be fine. The guys in the know here seem to recommend anything between 1200 - 1800 ppm or even higher - but I am sure someone will come along to correct me if I am wrong on this.  ;)

What grade of Mobil 4t racing do you use? I can only find 15w50 although the Mobil site says there is also 10w40

Checked the jug in the shed....Rotella T, 15W 40.
I dont know where I got the idea that synthetics were not recommended on the Savage. I do troll the Honda Rebel/Nighthawk 250 forums so it might have come from there. More than likely I just "misunderstood" something I read here :o

It's the 15w 50 I have been using. We seem to be limited in what is available over here when compared to the US. I am sure there is probably a nice cheap oil available in the UK which just needs pepping up with some ZDDP additive to be perfect for the savage. Problem is I just haven't found it yet!

FWIW, I called Mobil and they told me that Mobil 1 racing 4T has 1300 ppm ZDDP. I am using it in my bike as is. :)

Eureka! Emailed Exol (UK company) I use their universal tractor oil in my landrover discovery , most Landrover  forums recommend this   Got an email back very quickly which is nice as im still waiting to hear back from most other companies. (Opie oils excepted, who were very helpful). Any way Rob Lundie at Exol stated that their 10w40 motorcycle oil contains 1200 ppm also they sell optima vimax 10w40 and vanguard rally 20w50 which contain 1400 zinc   He says these last 2 aren't recommended for wet clutches but he has heard that they have been used without any problems. My only dilemma now is that the distributor only had 20l containers  of the motorcycle oil at 110 euro[ch128513] so have to decide wether to risk the non JASO oil (although it is about half the price)

If I'm right,, I THINK it was only in the last few years that Rotella T was actually tested and rated. They didn't change the oil to meet the standards, they had just never bothered to advertise as bike oil. The Kawasaki Bayou 250 forum, full of Rotella users.
If it's good enough to keep big rig engines alive, it's good oil. Diesels run high compression, harsh loads inside, and a million miles isn't considered extreme.
Someone posted a site that compares oils..

I can't remember where the oil test I read was found - but it was from a reliable source.  Their results showed  that anything over 1,400 ppm of ZDDP can cause wear to occur.  As a result....I try to keep mine over 1,200 and under 1,400.

I'm with Dave on this one. I run ~1200 ppm. Anything more really is not good for the engine. Zinc is actually a metal and will eat through your bearings at higher concentrations.

That is what I do.  And when I go to use my Redline bottle there is always a white sludge on the bottom that can't be shaken off the bottom.  I stand the bottle in my ultra-sonic cleaner with the heater turned on, and agitate and heat it for about 10 minutes.....then when I shake it the sludge goes back into solution.  If you don't have the ultrasonic cleaner you might be able to put the bottle in a hot water bath and do the same thing.

Dave,

I have my bottle of Redline on my workbench and every time I use the work bench I shake the bottle and turn it end for end and repeat the process each time I use the workbench.

I don't have an ultrasonic cleaner, so I will use the hot water bath. I changed oil yesterday and so far the there is no white sludge in the bottom of my six month old bottle.

Incidentally Amazon has the T6 Rotella for less than $20.00. For rural folks Amazon is a lifesaver.
