Title: Gas leak
Post by scotnstl on 08/30/15 at 19:20:17

I get home from riding and put the bike in the garage. Later I go out and smell gas. Its leaking from a tube under the bike near the kickstand switch. I shut the petcock off and it stops. I figure it is the float/float valve. I can also see  the oil level in the sight glass while it is on the stand. I am guessing I need to pull the carb and fix the float problem and change the oil. Do I need to change the filter also? I had changed the oil and filter less than 300 miles ago. Is there anything else I need to check or change? Thanks

Yeah, filter, too. Drain oil, pull the filter, then work on the carb, let stuff air out inside.
Make sure the float is floating.
Look for crud in the bowl that might have kept the float valve from seating.
Inspect the tip of the Needle that closes into the seat. The taper should be a line, no shoulder.
If the float is floating and the Needle looks good, seat good, and no crud, carefully inspect the rod and pivot of the float,

I would reuse the filter.

Just dump it out as well as possible. If there's some gas left in the filter, it will evaporate quickly once the oil warms up. It shouldn't harm anything provided you have plenty of oil to start with. Take it easy for a few miles so the leftover gas has a chance to evaporate.
