Title: Oil usage - new S40
Post by youngde811 on 08/28/15 at 20:39:20

Hi everyone. I've a 2014 S40; stock; 1700 miles. After the bike's first service at 700 miles, she's used about half a quart of oil. There are no leaks that I can see, and she doesn't seem to be burning it. I've been doing a lot of low-speed practicing with a good amount of friction-zone work, if that matters.

Is a bit of oil usage normal on a new bike? She gets ridden just about every day now. Thanks very much.

Cheers,
David

Thank you for not asking"what type of oil".

1/2 qt in 1000 miles is nothing to be concerned about. Check it before EVERY ride before the next scheduled change and use that as a standard. But the key is checking before every ride. Low oil capacity in an oil/air cooled
engine with a low oil capacity will not do it any good.

Rings aren't even seated good yet. No leaks, it's okay. My Guzzi used oil. I called the dealer, in Houston, I'm in Longview,, he said,
It'll stop at five thousand..
And it did. And once it's all broke in, it's gonna use oil..
You will see it when you're running at highway speeds and when you are playing hard, running through the gears,
And, my oil usage increased after I got 1500 or so miles on an oil change.
Save your money, use Rotella T 15-40.

You're fine, but be mindful.  I got dangerously low this afternoon because I hadn't been checking before every ride lately.  Fortunately, I'm very sensitive to the sound and vibration of this bike.  If I had gone the rest of the afternoon without adding oil it could have been a disaster.

Chuckle. And he sheepishly answers "Suzuki 10w-40". Despite the claims to Rotella T around here. Actually I've looked for that and haven't found any yet (Raleigh NC area).

If it's really that good I'll try some.

Cheers,
David

It's good enough to keep those diesels alive. And these
High class
Modern oils are not what was available when the crude valve train in these bikes was designed. If not for the valve train, then they'd be fine. As is, a less expensive, old school oil does a better job of keeping these dinosaurs alive.
How many 100,000 miles or close to it guys here? I'm sure of one, and I think there's a couple pretty close. And, IIRC, they run Rotella. At thirteen bucks a gallon, instead of two quarts, the savings mount up as maintenance costs drop. And wrenching time , fun as it is, just isn't Near as fun as riding.
