Title: Ever have one of those days?
Post by GridMonkey on 08/24/15 at 17:49:34

Hey all,

So technically it started last week. My petcock just went stupid, (new real raptor in the mail, should be in tomorrow/wed.) So the bike only runs in prime and its my only transportation right now. Today ran out of fuel in the left lane on the highway...on the way to the gas station. Highway Emergency Local Patrol ( kinda like free roaming AAA) stops, i get 1 gal gas from him, it looks/smells a bit old but it runs and off i go, not surprised the bike pops and chatters a bit more than normal, gas is old.. ok.. that's a thing... no worries.
UNTIL now its popping and chattering in front of me and my right leg is stupid hot.... pull over again...
Hey, my header collar is... off and my header is out of the cylendar and there is about a 3/16 gap of just open exhaust port blatting in my face...
Well, no ratchet set because i took off my saddle boxes thursday because they are getting a new paint job, but someone stopped about 5 minutes later who had some needle nose vice grips as their hood opening "handle" So, with the header wrap on and my already marred vest i was able to hold/replace the header in the port and re-tighten the collar bolts (small miracle they didn't go flying) enough to get me home....

So I'm hunkered down under my desk with some rabbits feet and 4 leaf clovers waiting for tomorrow to come and i got to thinking.l..

High temp thread lock? is there such a thing? If so can someone tell me please?  Cheap reliable(enough) adjustable torq wrench that i can get from harbor freight or lowes?

Also Versy, if you see this, going to be sending you a pm for a head plug and adjuster and actually go through with it this time. i dont need that popping on me now.

Thanks for reading, and i think it would be fun to hear about other "great days"

well after seeing that post everyone should grab a rabbit's foot and go to bed.

don't use thread lock, use anti seize or they will.

Don't use thread lock... in fact, I put a little anti-sieze on header bolts...
...and don't try to over-tighten... if you strip the head yer' skrewed...
...(you don't have enough rabbit feet for that)... :-?...

Just tighten both evenly,... and make it habit to recheck at oil changes...

Better to need to snug it up every so often than  strip it out once.

Yep....only snug those bolts up with a 1/4" ratchet and one hand.  Firmly snug.....not tight.

Thanks for the tips, and i had snugged it up with a 1/4 ratchet after i took it off and wrapped it, never checked it and never had to tighten it for the 3 years i've owned it until now, i guess i just didn't snug it up as much as it had been prior to me taking it off. who knows...

Versy, email sent.
