Title: I think I found my leak....
Post by chasethorn on 08/21/15 at 19:49:02

so I've been cleaning my bike and riding everyday to see where his leak is coming from. Here's some pictures of what I think may be the issue.
Seems like it comes from here...

But to be more specific, I think here ...

Causing all of this on the left side of the engine...

Looks like a head plug leak

It looks like two separate leaks, valve inspection cover and head plug. That leaking crack seems to be the lower edge of the VIC, but it alone doesn't seem to account for all the oil in the port next to the exhaust, why your bike most likely also has the famous plug leak.
The head plug is located in the roof of that port and would drip on the head bolt directly below and blow through to back of the engine, the oil would also migrate to the lower left side of the cylinder when the bike is stood on its side stand. Likewise a VIC leak would migrate to the upper left side and drip down the outside of the engine fins.

What would I do about the VIC if it's cracked? And where is the plug at?

It doesn't look like the VIC is cracked, just not sealing properly against the head. On one picture the lower edge of the VIC just looks like a crack.

On the head plug - Search and you shall find, it's been discussed many times, just remember to search in post for "all time" instead of the last "week" under the search tab.

Awesome! I'm at work now so I'll check it out here in a little while. I'll check the site as that is a common issue I see hahah

Is there a step by step thread with a head plug replace my just to see how to get to it? I can't fine one for some reason. Might be because I'm on my phone.

Here's a write-up about the leak in the tech section.

Don't think I can rip apart the bike anytime soon. Is ok to ride the bike with a leaky head plug???

Never heard of one just gush, but I would certainly be carrying oil and watching the leak rate..
You should have a gut feel for when to check the oil. If you can't pull the fill plug by hand after it's been warmed up, grab a piece of wood and put a groove in it that will let you do it without pliers,,

If you watch your oil level at least every time you fill up with gas, you should be ok.
But, I'm a bettin you'll want to get to it before it gets that bad.
a little bit of oil covers a lot.   :-?

I feel like once the ol Colorado winter hits, I'll stop being cheap and rent a garage here at my apartments. I feel like that's when I'm going to get down on the bike and do what's needed haha

A propane bottle and heater head that goes on it.
A trip to the Restore, habitat for humanity recycling center..
People sell/donate stuff when they remodel. An electric bathroom wall heater is HANDY. A friend gave me one. It sits under the work bench, warming the lower front, propane tank behind,, and the rubber pads, keeping the feet off of the cement,

Cinder block walls?
You got a work bench?  Tools?
