Title: New member with the standard problems
Post by MikeCanCU812 on 08/18/15 at 18:53:28

Newbie here. I got my '98 Savage in the Spring. 8,500 miles on it so pretty low. Needing the cam chain adjuster because of chain noise and its got the oil puke syndrome so motor is covered in oil coming from above the exhaust pipe. I love the bike but now gotta park it and repair it. Wish me luck

Good luck, I'm in a similar situation, bike runs fine it's just been neglected and in need of some beautification. The fun part is taking a motorcycle apart and working on it when I know nothing about taking a motorcycle apart and working on it!

Pretty low miles for the cam chain to be an issue. What's got you convinced?

I think it's been run pretty low on oil a few times. The guy I bought it off of didn't seem to be too into preventative maintenance from the looks of everything else at his house

I've been dealing with the oil leak until the riding season is over and check levels religiously but I think it had been leaking for awhile. Rode hard and put away wet

Anything close to ~60 mph will cause the engine to burn a little oil. Always check your oil level before you start her up!

Low oil most likely doesn't have much of an affect on the cam chain or tensioner.  The low oil usually affects the cam, rockers or cam bearings in the head.....or the piston gets scuffed and the rings get locked in the piston grooves.

Checking the valve clearance could give you a clue on the health of the cam/rockers - if the clearance requires more than just a few thousandths of adjustment you have some serious wear.  Checking the compression can give you an idea of the piston/cylinder health.  And checking the cam chain adjuster is never a bad idea on a used bike.

Yeah, what Dave said.
