Title: Which gasoline to use?
Post by youngde811 on 08/16/15 at 16:33:24

Greetings. I have a 2014 S40; completely stock. A buddy told me today that I should be running 93 octane gasoline in the bike -- it will help keep the carb and valves clean and the bike will "run smoother". I've been using 89 and my bike seems to run fine.

I'm sure this has been debated ad nauseum, but I'd like to know definitively: the manual states 87 minimum. What does that mean? Is "higher better" or does it bloody matter?

FWIW I add a fuel stabilizer to help compensate for the added ethanol (up to 10%) around here.

Thanks very much.

Cheers, David

There is no debate,... 8.5-1 compression does not need or want premium...
Just run regular... (nice if you can get no ethanol, but there's no option here, and it runs fine anyway)...

There's plenty of detergents in regular gas,.. additives are waste too..

Do try use Sta-bil fuel stabilizer if the bike will be sitting for over a month...

Yep...

Ah ok. Thanks very much for the replies. The bike is ridden at least four days per week so I guess that means I won't need fuel stabilizer either, at least until I park the bike for the winter (and it's really only too cold to ride for about two months).

Cheers, David

Higher octane won't improve your gas mileage, won't make it run smoother, won't keep the valves cooler, won't clean the engine/carb, etc. It ONLY prevents pinging. At 8.5:1 compression, this engine will run on the lowest octane available (don't go below 87 unless you are at a high altitude). I think Colorado sells 85 octane. Other high altitude states probably do too.
