I have an 08 s40. the bike will start right up and idle and run normal until it gets warmed up. after it is warmed up it when i give it gas it cuts out and just dies. the only way to get it started back up is to hold it wide open. When it does start it doesnt stay running and oil and gas drip out of the air box. Please help.

You need to test your petcock.

I have put the raptor petcock on and blocked the vacuum lines

I think you should pull the carb and at least clean it.
it's possible that your float valve needs replacing.
it's possible the main jet is sitting in the bottom of the bowl.

Why? when it cools off do you hear something snapping shut?

There are only 2 common things that cause this:

1) The carb is flooding and the fuel flows into the engine or air box.
2) The crankcase is overfilled with gas and/or oil and the engine is blowing the excess out the breather hose.

You need to check your oil level, and clean your carb.

I just want to thank you Dave for this great post. My husband and I replaced the petcock and my bike has now had 5 good rides with no issues. We really appreciate the time and effort you put into the solution post. Hopefully this is the end of it.
