Title: Oil for  a Suzuki s40?
Post by norman breedon on 08/11/15 at 15:50:07

Everybody,
I have question.

Castrol power RS racing 4T oil, 10w50, fully synthetic. What is the consensus? Good for a Suzuki S40 or not.

Thanks, Norman.

Yeah.. it will do OK.  at $10.00 a quart.

A lot of us use Shell Rotella T6.. which is a LOT cheaper.  About $20 a gallon.

I will let others preach the ZDDP stuff.  I just use the T6 straight up.

Hey Youzguys....you sure that Rotella stuff is any good?

I mean......you only have 120,000 miles on that bike.  And you never have taken the cylinder or head off to see if they are worn out......you just keep riding it!

Where's your proof? ;)

Plus, there is sometimes a rebate offer going on as well.

Rotella T6 is all I use in all my bikes.

Cheapskate here......I use the Rotella T in my motorcycles, lawn mower, car, truck, tractor, log splitter, etc.

Can't find any reason not to.  I used to buy expensive synthetic oil - but then I found out I don't really need to.  Even folks that race motorcycles on the track use Rotella with good results.  I have only been using Rotella T about 3 years and time will tell if it is the right thing.  But I never have had any oil related failure in any engine.

The only thing I buy expensive Esther based Synthetic oil for is my chainsaws.

You have almost 140,000 miles on a Savage with no engine work? Just oil changes, valve adjustments, and??
Amazing! What year is your bike?

I've been reading up on the Suzuki C50 v-twins, as I looked at a used 2007 with about 12,000 miles on it. The C50, of course, runs two cam chains and tensioners. Some of those owners have had these wear out at as low as 30,000 miles. On that bike, you have to pull the engine, and split the cases to replace them. The C50 ran great. Has Vance & Hines exhaust, Power Commander, and a Hurricane Manufacturing intake kit. The HD dealer went down to $2900 from the $3300 they were asking. Or, I could get a new 2012 S40 out the door for $5400. This is Hawaii, and bikes usually cost more here. An S40 I could do all the maintenance on.....

You can get a fair amount of maintenance done for $US 2600, then again how many hundreds of miles of flat super slab do you have in Hawaii? If there's lots of narrower twisty and hilly roads the S40 might have merit.

Thumper is a 2002.
I have adjusted the valves 3 times.. I think.  First time because somebody said it should be done.  2nd time when I changed the cam chain.
3rd time not too long ago because it sounded a bit noisy.  2 valves were a bit loose, one was a bit tight.

Other engine stuff.. nothing..  if you only look at the engine.

Carb, a couple repairs (slide, float seal).

Mufflers, quite a few (Harley mufflers just don't last, but they are free, if you have a lot of friends with Harleys)

Other things that just wear out.  Front brake line.  On my 3rd drive belt.  Clutch cable.  Fork seals.  That kind of stuff.

Quite a few pieces broken due to treating Thumper like a dirt bike.
(spokes, gas tank mount, rear fender (3 time?), muffler mount)

I have probably been pretty lucky, as I am not overly gentle with my riding.. a bit loony if you ask others.
Also, I think a bike will last longer if you ride it more often.   If you let it sit, it ain't good for it.  :D
