Title: torn diaphragm!
Post by verslagen1 on 08/01/15 at 22:01:35

no the rabbit didn't die.

I've been having carb issues for the past week.
the engine doesn't like a certain rpm off idle... sometimes.
backfires, crackles and pops... awesome and on command.

pulled the carb and found a hole in the diaphragm.

found some glue that's fuel proof (pliobond) at ace hardware.
used it last year to revitalize an intake duct on an old bike.
just slather it all over and it's like new... well at least the cracks are gone and it's flexible again.

unless anybody got a better idea, I'll use the pliobond to fix the hole.

Verslagen,

Goodyear Pliobond is the best contact cement ever made. If anything will stick to the diaphragm Pliobond will.

I sent an email about the seat fasteners.

It's the slide in the carb, but I have a spare   8-)

Similar problem, just a bit off idle until she warms up, then it is all good

That's normal for a cold engine.

repair update, the pliobond is not strong enough by itself to fix the cracks and they have opened up again.

Vercy, how about nylon window screening as a reinforcement ,pliobond to seal? kind of like fixing a hernia! Both should flex with movement , and be light weight.

Check that out.

Tight weave flexible screen

Might be able to use a mosquito net head protector. Check the Wal-Mart camping section.
I Guess polyester would be able to take the environment.
Heck, a patch of a piece of 100% polyester cloth, painted , squegeed in, with the glue, like you'd do fiberglass..
Might hafta glue it up, then cut to size.
Probably cut the perimeter out except for one or two Tails to hold it down by, smear it good, trim and apply.

I think I would just watch eBay or this forum for a donor carb....one that has a good diaphragm - but has a screwed up idle mix screw that is not salvageable.  Not sure what caused the hole - but I really can't see that you can reliable fix a hole in the carb diaphragm .

There are companies that make very affordable aftermarket diaphragm kits for popular CV carbs - do any popular bikes use a similar sized Mikuni carb that may have a matching diaphragm?

and enough material to do 10,000 diaphragms!   ;D

I'll have to check the material for stretchiness.

I'm thinking that if polyester fabric is able to survive in that environment, maybe just a snip off of something that you have around the house would work.

I am curious about what material would work for a patch.

The diaphragm is just rubber, so it's a no load situation.
any fabric will do, just completely coat with pliobond.

We use a lot of uncured fiberglass reinforced silicone rubber here.
But would dictate making a mold.
I could make a conical mold, but anything else would require 3d cnc work.

Versy- For buna-n repair you can use a 3M product called "847" it's a rubber and gasket adhesive that is resistant to heat and petroleum.
