Title: Gas tanks
Post by Steddy58 on 07/31/15 at 10:11:48

Hey all, having moved the speedo I now have hole in my tank which doesn't look good so does anyone know of a different tank which is compatible, preferably something which does not need a lot of work to make it fit and hopefully not too costly, cheers everyone

No tanks are a direct fit that I know of. Have a custom welder put a plate over the hole, smooth it down and paint it to match.

Jerry,
I have bought a kawasaki vn 750 tank to fit on the savage, It is 3 1/2 gallons. Not alot more but with the dial a jet added to my carb and a chain conversion I think I can easily get 60 plus miles a gallon. That puts me at 180 plus before I hit reserve. The dimensions of the tank are very similar to the stock tank but one added plus, they come with a fuel gauge! Yeah, I'll have a fuel gauge on a savage. And no instrument panel on the tank. I like it!

Hey Kris, I asked a welder if he could do something with it and he told me he had tried to weld one but it was too thin but I will look at the vn750 option thanks verslagen1, cheers all

I don't know what gauge sheetmetal it is but he's the pro welder, not me. I think it can be done but, again, he's the pro.

The VN750 tank looks almost exactly like the savage tank... w/out the hole.
I think even the mounting was the same.

I have welded up a stock tank.  It takes a Mig welder, and some patience.

I am going to do another one this winter - but I am going to try a lap weld and solder joints.  I believe there will be a lot warping and grinding of weld joints that way.  Properly done solder joints are plenty strong.....all fuel tanks used to be soldered before welding  was common.

Kris, I'm not a welder... but my dad kept mom and us kids fed for many a year being one. He, back before his eyes went to Hades, could edge-weld two sheets of 20 thousandths stainless. Yup, two hundreths of an inch, and he welded a lot of it! I've seen one other guy I know weld two sheets of aluminum foil together... just to prove it could be done.

So, there's pros, and guys who think they're pros...

Or it could be the difference in welding machines. Dad used a TIG a lot. Not fast, but there is nothing you can't weld with a TIG. Aluminum, steel, stainless, titanium, copper, magnesium (yes, it can be welded, you just gotta do everything right) and a bunch of other metals I can't remember. Your guy may not have access to a TIG...

I've seen first hand some of the work that the guys who think they can weld will do. It ain't pretty!

What year VN 750 tank is a good fit? My guess is they all would fit !! 8-)

I went to eBay and looked.....it didn't seem the mounting points were anywhere near the same as the Savage.

The guys at RYCA cut the bottoms out and reweld to shorten the tank, so it must be doable by guys with the skills.

Same here... looked like the tank attachments were way off... though I could be missing something. Wish those evil-bay photos had good lighting and views of the bottoms of the tanks.

Many thanks for all the info, there's a few good pointers, as for the welding I guess it all depends on how confident you are and if it's someone else's property that's going to cost you I know there's guys out there who could weld cooking foil but that sort of class won't come cheap  :) once again thanks

Just a quick update - I decided to let a friend loose on it and here are the results the guy who is going to paint it says he'll fill it and gently slope the filler from near the edge of the tank to top of the lip of the hole so hopefully you won't notice that the hole was there. I think hes done a good job of the welding - no holes and fairly neat. A bit of grinding and bobs your uncle, cheers all

Nice find Kris01.... I have been looking at back street bike shops...and will keep looking.
There has got to be a 4 gallon tank out there that will work! LOL...... probably have to take off the chrome head covers though...

Yeah strang mate, not too shabby seein' as he isn't a welder he picked it up welding patches onto a couple of classic minis he has.

Post by strang on 08/18/15 at 11:16:25

ahh minis - plenty of welding practise there  ;)
I used to own a mini van in my yoof - new owner is probably trying to weld it back together right now.
Miss it.

Mig or stick? Looks like stick, but I can't imagine a bead that big on such thin metal.

The bead looks big, as the lip where the speedometer hole meets the tank top is still in place.  The welded in sheet appears to be sitting on the inside of the bead.

I was looking at a tank from a Hyosung GV250.  It looks like a direct fit.

Judging by pictures the mounts on the GV250 tank seems to be a bit more forward than our tank. But if it could be made to fit that'd be pretty sweet -  14l capacity and fuel gauge built in.

However,,, not something I want in on. I did body repair for a few years..
The mig was an absolute MUST, I got to work on a 56 Chevy door. Buddy, lemme tell ya, that is real steel.

Dave, I'm still droolin over that tank. :P Can't wait to see the next one might buy it if for sale. Hope mine turns out that smooth. A tank Suzuki should have built. I like that gas cap you got on there Steddy but I'd be leary off a little grinding and Bob's your uncle. That plate is welded below the lip(two seperate pieces of thin metal) and grinding it down could seperate it. If you haven't already pressure tested it  just to check the welds and let your buddy know how well he did. I would do it after grinding the welds down to prepare for body filler and paint. Unless your speaking of sanding the body filler down to smooth it for paint. What I understood, he's going to put body filler from all the edges of your tank, raising your profile up say a 1/4" to match the lip. Essentially keeping the same shape but making it wider(thicker) a 1/4" all over till it evens out with the lip? If so,  it sounds cool just wanted to let you know to be careful about smoothing out those welds. My plate sits on top the lip and I'm nervous. Dave, how was your plate sitting? I've seen the before and after paint pics but not any before the body filler. Did you smooth out your welds or did they look like pennies layered( smooth already)? Idk if this is a difference between tig and mig welding but mines has the large weld bumps too.

Also if i can upload the pics. A 1987? 1989? Yamaha virago tank 1 1/2" cut out the middle and ??? how much cut of the end. A friends project for a cb550 project before he found another tank. He might use it on a savage build, been trying to talk him into to getting one.  Has a deep channel and that cable looks like a fuel gauge.http://

Sorry for late reply JOG 2 yeah it was mig ( clarkes MIG130 EN no gas ) and as Dave said the lip is still on the tank as I was advised you cant grind it down. As Verslagen suggested I have bought a vn 750 tank to use while my tank is being painted will post pics when it gets back, cheers all

Would it be possible to put the GV250 sending unit and fuel gauge into the stock savage tank? Looks like 3 holes but would need to be mounted into the right spot to give an accurate reading.

Post by Steddy58 on 08/26/15 at 19:07:12

Bought the vn tank and it wont go straight on cos of the the two bars which stick out of the frame which the rubber circular thingys go on for siting the original tank and as I only want the vn tank on while my tank is in the paint shop I think I'll leave any modding of frame or the vn tank til later - by the way are the two rods for the rubber wotsits ( sorry for all the technical words ) hollow or solid, cheers all ps JutMan not sure about the gv250 idea but someone will probably be along later with the answer cheers

Title: Re: Gas tanks
Post by verslagen1 on 08/26/15 at 22:19:53

They are solid.  You'll need to cut the stock tank supports off.  you'll need to fab replacements for the new tank.

If the new tank has the same horseshoes for the rubber tank dampers, then there's a couple of ways to make new ones.

I found the rubber dampers will stick on the head of a 5/16" allen head bolt.  If you get a 1" diameter aluminum spacer, 1 with a 5/16 hole thru the other threaded for the bolt.  Measure the distance between the horseshoes.   Subtract the width of the frame, divide by two.  That's the length of the spacers.

You can tape the dampers on the tank and place the tank on the frame.  use spacers to get the tank where you want it.  Mark the spacer location on the frame and remove the tank.  Place the spacer on the frame to locate the hole and drill a hole thru as square as you can.

I was looking and there are lots of the sending units on ebay and some gauge clusters.  I will have to find a cheap savage tank to play with.  There is a nice flat spot on the opposite that may be enough to place the sending unit then mount the gauge on the handlebars.

I looked at the other virgo? mentioned as well.  The tank looks good with modification, but the problem is the gauge which is custom to the cluster.  There is an aftermarket gauge that also includes a tach which would be nice as long as you can figure out how to hook up the tach.
