Title: S40 - slight ticking noise from engine
Post by youngde811 on 07/27/15 at 18:49:42

Hello all. I have a 2014 S40 with 1200 miles on it. Completely stock. I'm a new rider (about four months) and lately have been doing a *lot* of low-speed practice sessions in a parking lot. Lots of friction zone work; a few mistakes where I've revved the bike with the clutch lever pulled in (clutch out?). One particular rev was pretty high (I was in a bind and was concentrating on not dropping the bike) Note that after all of these sessions I find a place to just cruise at 35 to 45 to give the bike a chance to "relax".

In any event, after one of these sessions I noticed a faint ticking noise coming from the engine that I'm certain wasn't there before. It would match engine revs but maintained a constant volume (low). Only seems to begin after the engine is hot. Now. Especially odd is the fact that this lasted a few days (I ride about four times per week) then disappeared this past Saturday. Haven't heard it since, even after more low-speed work.

The bike had its first service at 700 miles about three months ago. I read this forum frequently and have noticed things like cam chain tensioners, valve adjustments, etc. All of this seem way to early for my bike.

So I'm wondering if this a Bad Event waiting to happen or a) nothing to worry about; b) just my imagination; c) part of being a new bike that's finally getting ridden frequently.

Thanks for any comments.

Cheers, David

Chalk it up to inexperience. She's a noisy beast. Let us know if it gets worse.

Light ticking, kinda sewing machine esque. Ish. That's desirable.
The valve train is gonna be noisy, or, it's too tight.
Just keep an eye on the oil and air in the tires.
It's pretty new for problems.
Hang out, do some reading, and you'll be ready to get on the valves at five thousand.

Yes! That's it! Sewing-machine like. Perfect description. Thanks to all for the advice.

With the stock muffler, "sewing machine" will suffice or even "lawn mower".  :D

I was riding through the neighborhood a few months back. A woman stopped me and said "that's the quietest motorcycle I've ever heard!".

Mine seems to really come alive (noise-wise) at around 55 mph with a Dyna muffler.

Kris has more relevant information in his tagline than we are often able to drag out of newbies in a day. Include a general mileage and Shazzam,,,

It beats having to explain if I ever need help.  ;)

I think everyone should post some info in their signature. Not mandatory, just a good idea.

The sewing machine sound is pretty soothing along with the bumpy exhaust pulse. 8-)

At full cruise you're certainly right about that.
