Title: 17" tire clearance
Post by FerousBastard on 07/27/15 at 10:31:10

Hi all,
Have searched the forums but can't seem to get a clear answer. Plan on fitting a 17" F650 rear rim to my (future) Savage to balance the look of the bike. Have read several comments saying you should stick with a tire less than 26" in diameter with the stock swing arm unless you want to notch it. So a 130/80-17 tire should fit just fine at 25"
But would a 140/80-17 tire at 25.8" fit, that is the question, or is that cutting it too close?

every bike is different.
take what you got and measure.

Wait...an F650 17x8 Ford truck rim? Am I reading this wrong?

What size tire is on it?
How much bigger is the one you want?
What kinda gap between tire and obstructions?
Fat tires have been known to rub bolts in the fender.

Oh! no, should have specified.. It's a BMW F650 3.00/17" aluminum rim, pretty common here in Europe.

Will do thanks and thanks for the heads up, will post the results as soon as I can.

Oh, whew...ok! I thought you were trying to mount a truck rim. I've heard crazier things though!  :D

I saw one last week.  A fellow had grafted the front of some kind of open wheel race car, onto a KZ1000 and made a 3 wheel vehicle.  For the rear wheel he made a hub that he could bolt an early VW bug wheel...the kind with the really large diameter bolt spacing.

I'm currently running:
150/90-15
25.63" in diameter.
I've got about 3/4" clearance.

So I'd say your tyre would go on my bike, perhaps 1/2" of clearance? Getting pretty tight. Like others say the swingarms probably vary a bit - I don't think they're laser cut.  :)
At a guess 1/4" clearance difference between bikes?

I am going to go 17" at the back eventually as I want to get away from the cruiser look and am happy enough with 17" to not bollocks around cutting the swing arm. When current set of tyres are done I'm gonna get the back wheel respoked 17" and run 120/90-17 which are 25.5" so will fit fine.
tyres will look like this:

Pretty nice for a scrambler/flat tracker type. Not pure cafe but a bit different is good in my book.

My current tyres may last a while though the pace my build is taking...

Where you at? I see you on dotheton as well.

I'm running 130/90-16 with about 1/2" clearance on the rear.

I'm in Denmark. Am still planning things out, so when I do, things slots together nicely without too many hiccups - Sticking with stock for the most part, adding and subtracting in the right places to make the most difference. If you ask me the Savage is a well designed bike with loads of build potential if you have an unconventional eye.
Am going for a scrambler/tracker type look hence the 17" rear and 19" for the most dual sport tire choices. A 120/90 or 130/80 should look and feel more planted than your 'run of the mill' 18" cafe racer rear, plus the larger front should skip nicely over the rough stuff  ;)

With verslagen's measurements there's more than half an inch in difference between my swingarm and his.
I got dumbass lucky, just ordered a 150/90-15 and it fit - would check once you have a specific bike.
Your mock up photoshop looks cool and a lot cleverer than building everything from scratch. With a 17" rear, even better.
Denmark, not so far. I fancy checking out Wrenchmonkees workshop one day  :)

That's the plan, thank you.  :)

Thanks! Like to think that the original designers and engineers put a lot of thought into the bodywork of the bike, so would rather build on and work with that than start over completely.

Haven't even been there myself, could be cool to roll around one day. :)

That would be great - I need inspiration to finish.
I'm planning on turning up at "Wheels and Waves", south of France/Spanish border next year.
I recon a savage scrambler would give these two a run for their money (for 30 metres anyway):

I'm really liking that Photoshop job!

Definately.
I remember pulling out a round-about being an 80's Ferrari on my old Savage, he floored it and I thought why not, the Savage kept up beutifully up until 95km/h, at which point he turned sharply into an industrial estate. He must have been a bit frustrated with that tiny 'moped' in his rear-view mirror.
