Post by Dave on 07/20/15 at 11:21:23 There is no reason to use a tube sock......not when you can buy filters for a reasonable price that will actually do a proper job of cleaning the air. Paper filter elements filter the air by having very small holes between the fibers, and blocking the flow of dirt. Oiled foam/gauze air filters work by catching the dirt in the sticky oil that is adhered to the media. A tube sock....with keep the big stuff out but will still allow small abrasive stuff into the engine and it will wear out the cylinder/piston/rings quickly if you ride in a dirty environment. |

Someone on an old post I saw showed how they made a filter using some other stiff stitched to the stock screen, but I can't remember who it was.... |

Seriously though, I have heard of people in dusty places using a sock as a pre-filter to a cone filter set-up, but I have never done it. If you do, make sure it's an old sock with the colored rings around the calf area. The stripes will add some nostalgia to the look ;) How's the savage/rear wheel. All buttoned up and back to normal now? |

If you want to fiddle with it and get more potential 'airflow' through it, then there are a few things to consider..... I believe that the cam, etc, has more to do with the standard bike being 'asthmatic', rather than the air/petrol intake side of things. |

Post by Dave on 07/20/15 at 18:42:03 Back in the old days.....I believe it was "Filtron" that made a foam filter shaped like a tube sock and it has a wire spring inside to help it keep it's shape. It was one of the first filters that off road racers would put on their bikes when they were taking scramblers and street legal enduro bikes and turning them into racers. The foam was oiled and they did a good job of keeping dirt out.....but provided no protection from water. As more sophisticated off road bikes came along with better air boxes that kept water out.....the Filtron sock fell out of fashion. |
