Whats your all's opinion on using a Tube sock as a air filter? used to do it on a 87 yamaha moto 4 we had.

I would not recommend it

I stand by the stock airbox, but I did modify it to have more volume between filter and carb.
Think skinny straw and a malt.
The less surface area a filter has,,,

There is no reason to use a tube sock......not when you can buy filters for a reasonable price that will actually do a proper job of cleaning the air.

Paper filter elements filter the air by having very small holes between the fibers, and blocking the flow of dirt.

Oiled foam/gauze air filters work by catching the dirt in the sticky oil that is adhered to the media.

A tube sock....with keep the big stuff out but will still allow small abrasive stuff into the engine and it will wear out the cylinder/piston/rings quickly if you ride in a dirty environment.

I think you're probably better off shaking out the stock filter and reusing it rather than using a tube sock, as Dave noted.

Someone on an old post I saw showed how they made a filter using some other stiff stitched to the stock screen, but I can't remember who it was....

I was meaning in general guys lol, my filter is fine on the bike, we just done it to a 4wheeler to run around on. Kinda a funny thread

Well then, that's a game changer. If it's not a savage, I say cut the filter out altogether!

Seriously though, I have heard of people in dusty places using a sock as a pre-filter to a cone filter set-up, but I have never done it.  If you do, make sure it's an old sock with the colored rings around the calf area. The stripes will add some nostalgia to the look  ;)

How's the savage/rear wheel.  All buttoned up and back to normal now?

a lack of a filter has the same consequences, early demise.

To me, the stock airbox/filter does a great job.
If you want to fiddle with it and get more potential 'airflow' through it, then there are a few things to consider.....

I believe that the cam, etc, has more to do with the standard bike being 'asthmatic', rather than the air/petrol intake side of things.

Back in the old days.....I believe it was "Filtron" that made a foam filter shaped like a tube sock and it has a wire spring inside to help it keep it's shape.  It was one of the first filters that off road racers would put on their bikes when they were taking scramblers and street legal enduro bikes and turning them into racers.  The foam was oiled and they did a good job of keeping dirt out.....but provided no protection from water.

As more sophisticated off road bikes came along with better air boxes that kept water out.....the Filtron sock fell out of fashion.

back when Pro Street was the rage and folks were running velocity stacks, some guys used to put tennis balls in the stacks as 'filters'
Uh huh, bet it worked real good on a car that was never driven
Just because some one did it back when doesn't mean it's a good idea

Art.....they tennis balls were removed before the engine was started.  The tennis balls just kept stuff from falling (or people from throwing stuff) down the holes when the engine wasn't running.

True for the most part, I did see a few being run that way though :-?
