Title: TU-250  ?
Post by MnSpring on 07/14/15 at 16:08:56

TU-250
Thinking of getting one.
Reason: Something to drive, when the S40, is apart.
Something for short trips.

Had D/S  250’s before, but a bit lacking on the State Hwy’s.
A 650 CC is plenty  enough.
Don’t need a $20,000 ++++   MC  to look, ‘kool’.

So thinking of the, ‘retro’, looking TU250.
(Have had, several, 'real' , retro Barn Queens, but they are ride for 5, fix for 25)

A TU-250 Forum I have looked  over,
is mostly people, trying to make a, ‘pigs ear out of a silk purse’.

Any thoughts, experience, ideas, problems with it?

Post up info, pics, what kinda riding are you wanting from it?.
I'm thinking I rode one on the beach in Galveston, but, it's been years.
Have you considered a Kawasaki?

You need to ride one before you get committed.  A 250 single is not very peppy.  I owned a 250 Kawasaki Super Sherpa for a bit....county roads and below 60 was fine.  Expressway was doable only for very short runs when there was no other way to get there.

Performance wise the little Ninja 250 is huge leap up in power and roadworthyness.  When I get the Cafe' conversion done I will probably even like the way it looks.

I was looking at one when I bought the S40. It just seemed too small to be my only bike. As a second bike I think it would be great and I probably would have bought one if it had a kickstart. That's pretty much why I bought the SR400. I was thinking about getting the 150 cc Sym Wolf until I found out Yamaha was bringing the SR back to the States.

Edited for more better spelling

In 1978, had a Auction on a huge MC place in Mpls.
This, ‘owner’ screwed, 'everybody’, he could.
(Thus the forced sale by the IRS/SBA/Local bank)

Their was a New  G.W. on the floor, with ALL the Bells & Whistles,
he had 2,995.00 on it.
He, ’Sold’, it, 1,000’s of times.
Each time, a 100.00 - 250.00 down, some even $500.00 down.
with a receipt which he wrote out, which had, Everything on the bike,
and ALL the info about you.
Just missing ‘one tinny little thing’,  The VIN of the Bike !!!!!!!!!!
(He did this on Several Bikes)

Their was ONE, bike, (the person who make the Down Payment on,
Insisted on putting the VIN, on his Down Payment recite).

The bank called, said to release it.
(He went to the bank, paid for it in full)
Told the bank, will be at the, ‘office’, (12 miles from the, Auction site,) the next day.
Guess who, got to drive it over !!!!!!!!!
A Bran New,  1978 Yamaha XS650, State of the art!
I think it took 25 miles to get their !

It is something that sticks in my memory.
Been looking for one for a long time.
But only finding, POS, Run down, rusted out, wore out, crap,
which are grossly over priced.
Or some, ‘re-make’, into a ‘bobber’ or ‘cafe racer’.
(Nothing wrong with those, just not what I want)
Also looked at ’new’, Triumphs/Endfields,  (old style ones)
But spendy, hard to find the ‘expensive parts, (if needed),
And, not, ‘Hop on and go’.

Turned my attention to the TU-250.

Looked at others, (not driven them)
Rebel/Virgo, in 250, just not appealing.
Looking for, ‘retro’, with, ’new’, convinces.

From experience, a 250 single,  (D/S/’s)
in, most cases, is very lacking for, ’State Hwy’s”
But for County Roads, they worked well.
(Well outside of the loose fillings in my teeth !)

So if no, TU-250 Experience, then so be it.
May have to find a used one, and try it out for a year.

TU-400 ?      would be great !  :)

The Yamaha 400 has brushes riding a rotor , instead of a permanent magnet .     :(

Hello ::: SUZUKI  ...  are you listening ???

The 250cc  looses speed going up hill .

I really like that SR
I'd like it better in 600-650 with an electric leg
(I rode enough kick only bikes when I was young enough to think jumping around on a moto was 'cool')
Might consider it even with the kicker, with a few more cubes, I want a bike that will highway without revving the whee out of it
I do like the TU 250 too, for city / backroad riding, but not any road with a limit of more than 60

Yamaha has downsized and removed equipment from the SR.

The one my brother had years ago was 500CC and had a disk brake on the front. It did not have fuel injection though.

I have not tried either of these 250cc bikes but what I have read on them is generally good. The kymco Venox made in Taiwan and the Hyosung 250cc cruiser (I forget the name of it at the moment) made in Korea. I think I could enjoy either one of those as a second bike.

My brother has had a lot of Kymco Scooters in recent years and never had any trouble with them.

If anyone misses the depth of that humor, words fail.

Yes, a TU Style, (LIGHT WEIGHT/NIMBLE), with all the, modern, stuff, in a 400-500cc. ( I Think), would be a HUGE Seller.
I Believe a  LOT of people are very tired of a, $20,000.00 +++ HD, costing them another several hundred a year, for the, 'dealer', Maintenance.  (er'  Change oil)_   ;D

Popular Mechanics did a review on it.  Here's a link.
Sort of a glossy, warm and fuzzy type review but still a review.

Here's one from Motorcycle USA

Almost bought a GZ 250 a couple years ago but it got gone before I got there.

Used would be the way to go. Find a good enough deal and you might even make a little bit. But breaking even would be a good deal. Anther used bike you might consider, if you can find one, would be the CB 250 Nighthawk. Still a 250 but a twin. It should have a little more power. Not quite as retro looking as the TUX but still a naked standard. I think it's the same engine Honda uses in the Rebel.

I think those TU 250'S were called Volty's in my country. I feel sure it's the same engine as a GN250 which I brought when I reintroduced my self to motorcycling after a twenty seven year break. It would do it's 100kmh ,62 mph ok but anything more was a little more challenging. and for most of it's life it topped out at about 68-70 mph. Steep gradients did present a power loss. If I had mega dollars and a Jay Leno garage, I'd have one for nostalgia, after three years on it I needed bigger and the S40 fits 90% of the bill.

Yes, the Rebel 250 and more rare 450 used the same engines (the 250 and 450 are different) as their Nighthawk counterparts, and, had Honda not killed the Nighthawks in favor of their Sales Pig, would still likely be in production today, as the Nighthawks were sales leaders (proof that not all American motorcyclists are dumb, but Honda sure can be)
