Title: Bobber/Sporty/Cafe/Brat Build (Not really sure ;))
Post by gchdavid on 07/13/15 at 13:37:59

Hello Ladies and Gents. I am a new Savage owner and figured I would start a thread to showcase the journey with my ugly duckling. First, I know bikes are 100% a thing of taste, I come from a rocket background and therefore will lean towards that type of design somewhat so please bear with me. That being said, I didn't buy a rocket this time around for a reason. I wanted a simple bike I could commute to work on a regular basis and at the same time be desirable enough to enjoy it on the weekends.

So I will just add some pics I have taken over the last 3-4 weeks owning her as a do some things here and there.

First, here is a bike I like a lot and one that is partly motivating the build although I am not going for exactly this.

Cheers! :)

Here are some pics from when I picked her up (had seen better days)

I then immediately tore some things down in order to switch the handle bars and prep it for the tires I wanted to install.

I then received the tires...what a difference did they make on both looks and handling (Shinko 777).

I then installed a plate relocation kit (includes brake light as well but we are not there yet ;)). Removing the OEM stuff really cleaned up the rear.

I also ordered a Harley Sporster 48 seat (same as the bike pic in my first post) and will be having a friend re-upholster it to my specs.

David,

If you want to sell the sissy bar and the chrome fender supports I may be interested if the chrome is really nice.

Looking great so far! That rear tire looks huge ;D

I thought I read in here somewhere that they didnt make white-walls for the Savage rims? Regardless, they look awesome.

The whitewalls he's using required clearancing the swingarm, and likely relocating the fender
technically they are a bit fat for a stock savage rim, but you can get away with that, to a point, though the tire's profile will be altered

Its just a 150 90 15 (Shinko 777 White Walls) so its not that huge considering the bike came with a 140 90 15. It just looks that way now that you can see the tire without the plate etc in the back. I only had to clearance the swing arm a bit, more for safety than anything. I did not have to move the fender, only use "flusher' hardware.

:)

Hello Kenny,

I'm willing to sell that entire assembly. I don't know how nice is "nice" but I could take some up close pics and you can determine that. PM me if you want those pics.

Thank you.

I really like the look of the larger WW tire on the back with a matching tire up front. Shinko tires have been good for me so far as well. Keep the pictures coming...

Quick Update! The seat is finished and it looks and feels great. Now to begin the irreversible part of my mod list which will require some cutting of the frame and the fabrication of a seat pan that matches the seat and the geometry of the frame.

Cheers!

Thanks for the kind comments.

I was out of town for the past week and just got back so nothing much has happened. I did have a chance to take some pics of the seat just "thrown" on the bike for no reason at all :P

Frame will need to be cut, fender dropped/moved before the seat can be mounted. I'll post more as I get them.

Cheers!

Started working on the fender mockup. Not sure if I like the trailer fender with it being flat but I decided to try it before cutting the OEM one. If I dont like it I will just remove it.

Next up: frame cutting and seat install :)

(Please Ignore my friend Juan in the pic...lol)

Quick update...Point of no return has been reached. Fender got painted last night so I worked on installing that. Then began work on fitting the new seat which required cutting into the frame. I partially cut, bent and re-welded the original fender/seat supports. Proceeded to "slant" cut them and grind them to allow the seat to sit flat and then reinforced them with internal welding to make them rigid. The new seat is almost in the bike. Now  I just need to make a seat pan to cover the wiring etc and to allow it to mount up properly but decided to take some pics with the seat on the bike for amusement purposes.

Cheers!

Truly a work of art David! Congratulations on an outstanding build!

In my head she screams for a white or dove gray tank, but other than that she is literally PERFECT.

Your work seemed well thought out and meticulous, and it shows in the end result. Very nice job.

Thank you for the kind words Stu. The original plan was to do Satin black on the tank as well but I too have been contemplating a white tank...perhaps a satin white tank with satin black letters (S for suzuki??). The initial though came after seeing this bike which happens to be a savage as well although the build look and tank is different than mine:

I like this bike a lot as you have it now - with the red tank and the brown seat. Simple, no nonsense, tough looking, whatever that means.
The tank in your link is very cool as well though.
I like a white tank.
But the red looks very cool with the brown seat, and it is the factory paint job so pretty sturdy and no work.
Actually this post isn't really helping you decide  ;D

Strang, I appreciate the feedback. You can't tell in the pics but the oem red tank is scratched up, far from a nice finish, part of the reason I got the bike so cheap. Otherwise I wouldn't mind keeping it a bit longer. I guess I could plastidip the tank black or white first to see what it looks like and if I don't like it I can peel it off...

I'm using some from Amazon, they are the right diameter and have a 4.5" pull back. The way they are setup they do allow the controls to touch the tank so I'm thinking of changing them to a higher angle so they miss the tank or replacing them all together with some that have less pull back. The bars are 28" wide I believe.

Cheers!

Quick update. Installed an EMGO reverse cone muffler. It rained today after I got to the office so I decided to take some wet pics. It sounds great althought its super loud...too loud. I will working up a baffle to install in it so I don't get pulled over all the time. I also ordered some clubman bars that should prevent the tank from being hit.

Cheers!

Hey man, I just joined this site because a friend is going to sell me her 1995 Savage next Spring and want to see what everyone else is doing to these. I love the look you're going for! I think we have the same look we want to achieve. Not a bobber or a cafe racer, but something sleek, sporty and sexy. I want to have a little bit of a sport bike look, but nothing outrageous.
Your build is looking great! Get that tank painted either black or white already. Can't wait to see what else you have in store!

Hello peeps. Clubman Bars came in on Saturday and they are installed. Its back to the agressive riding position I like but without hitting the tank. Awesomeness!

Cheers!

Glad you like the new riding position.  I have to admit, I like the looks of your previous bars better but that's just my personal bent.
Real sharp looking bike.  If I didn't rely so much on my saddle bags, I would be going for the bobber look, too.

Those clubman bars are sick, dude...right on!

If I may, I'd suggest doing something about the turn signals. They don't quite seem to fit your vision.

You are 100% correct. I've actually had turn signals like the ones I used out back for almost 2 months and just haven't gotten around to installing them because I've been riding too much. I'll get that done soon :)

Cheers!

Mean looking bike you've got there!  If you get a chance could you post some up close pictures of the details on the license plate mount?  I'm curious to how you've done it.  Also if you have time I'd love to see details on the mirror you had on the drag style bar, and how that was done.

Thanks!!

For the plate mount I just purchased a universal steel "upright plate mount with tail light" from ebay and then I mounted it using the bottom nut on the left rear shockt. I just wired it into place on the stock harness.

The mirror is an "off the shelf" unit, look for universal bar end mirror on Amazon...they are dirt cheap. Make sure they are for a 1" Dia bar and you will be golden (maybe a bit of tweaking to get it to work).

Cheers!
