Title: Project racer completed
Post by rockabilly on 07/13/15 at 09:20:18

About 6 months ago I posted a link to my cafe racer build which showed it up to a half completed bike. Well the good news (for me anyway!!) is it's pretty much up and running - just a bit of gearing and mixture to sort. Other than that I am now the proud owner of a 1986 Suzuki Savage cafe racer.
If you need to get to sleep at night follow this link http://www.bikerbuyz.co.uk/general.html and you'll find a pdf with lots of pics of bits and pieces and a write up of what was involved, sure to send even the worst insomniac to sleep. Other than that I've stuck one picture here to wet your appetite.

Wot do ya reckon guys - cool as a penguins doo dah or wot! ;D

Glad you like it - sounds like an old piece of Brit Iron as well - makes a change from my Hinkley Triumphs!

Nice! I was wishing my S40 was a Cafe today on the freeway at 75  ;D

Very tidy job. Got the wrap laid right, and the peg location smokes..I like the color, everything... I'm too old for the handle bars, but I'd grin watching someone else ride it.

Yep kinow what you mean about the bar position - just turned the big six 0 and the back knows it! But once it's up to 50 no problem in fact quite comfy :)

I had to smile ,,, yep,, the wind unloads the arms and back.

What all is between the silver ovals? Is the rear fender aluminium?
If I saw it parked somewhere I'd spend a while walking around it.
There are several here who have done the kind of work that would catch the eye of a rider, especially folks who have spent time building.

The panels cover up the battery and a bit of wiring and yep the rear fender is a polished alloy one, I tried to get a match for the front, but gave up in the end as they were too narrow and a modded rear one just didn't look right.- funny thing bit of speed and it becomes comfy while my regular ride becomes a bit of a neck strainer! Picking up some new rear sprockets tomorrow so start playing with the ratio's.
Oh and manual de-compressor works really well!

That chopper would set my hands off sooo bad
long reaches are not for me any more, I gotta have a bend in the elbow, unless I'm forward, like on a sporty bike / cafe

It's not so bad as it looks - I do about 120 miles at a stretch no more cos it runs out of gas! Got another one on the go a Hinkley Bonneville, not as long and a bit more of a relaxed position should be pretty good once it's finished, again very different from the Savage - next project will be a flat tracker of some sort - possibly a CB500!

I didn't mean the bike was bad, I meant it'd be bad for me, I have some sort of weirdness with the nerves in my arms
close to straight arms + trying to maintain a pull to stay upright against the wind blast = tingling  / numbness in the hands
120 miles is more than I can manage on a stock S40's seat  ;D

Yep understand that - Had something similar years back - fingers would tingle and would lose feeling in hand or they would cramp up. In the end they found a swelling in my wrist which they said were "ganglions" and they were where the nerves had broken through and getting odd pressure on them hence the strange sensations - had a minor op and everything back to normal!

Sounds like carpal tunnel syndrome.

I have the same problem with tingling / numb hands after riding for a while.  If I can get my wrists in a certain position, it goes away but it's hard to keep your wrist in one positioin while riding a bike.

For me it seems to be as related to gripping as wrist position
Pulling exercises in the gym can set it off if I'm not actively resisting the urge to 'wrist curl' heavy pulls (chins, pulldowns, rows)
So I'm not sure how much is the straight arms and how much the pulling
I do get it on sporty bikes too, but not as much, and wrist angle is a factor
Sometimes I can ride the S40 all day (butt burn aside) and sometimes not
Maybe I could ride that chop with a driver backrest  ;D
It is a sweet ride

I usually get less tingling and numbness when riding the ninja than the savage. I agree about the gripping, sometimes it seems that way for me too.

I finally figured out why I like the way the ninja rides.  It handles like my old goldwing...just a little more top-heavy and a lot less power..  Now, if I could just get a double-bucket touring seat and some slightly higher bars on it.

On the savage, my butt gets sore. On the ninja, my crotch and man parts go numb. Both need seat mods or other seat as mentioned above.

Just an update on the racer running.
Now running 17 tooth front - 47 tooth rear
52.5 pilot, 150 main with needle set on top groove, 2 turns out on the pilot screw.

Pilot needs to be a bit richer as we have a bit of a surge when changing gear and shutting off and tick over a bit poor. BUT other than that bike is topping at 103 which isn't too shabby and pulls like a train. Only issue is that the chain stretches like a bit of knicker elastic and the clutch springs aren't holding so time for some stronger springs and a heavyweight chain!!

The throw out lever is sintered metal. They have been known to break.

If we're talking about an EX series, motorcycle larry makes risers fo them that raise the bars 1 inch, dunno about the Zxs

Man 103, my S40 won't touch that tops at 80 or 85, depending on slope and wind
