Title: Replacement tires
Post by Ronnie on 07/12/15 at 17:13:45

I guess I don't know how to use the search very well because no matter what I type in I get zero answers.  I am looking for what you experienced drivers use as a replacement tire for both the front and back for a 2007 S40.
I live on Maui that has wet roads a lot so that is a consideration.

Thanks for any help

Pirelli MT66 100/90/19 front and 140/90/15 rear. the IRCs that came on my 09 went 5500 rear and 6600 front (junk) the bike now has 16900 on it and the Pirellis look almost as good as the day I put them on.

of course it depends on what you search for.

If you searched for "replacement tire for both the front and back for a 2007 S40" you won't find much if anything.
but if you search for "tires" there should be a lot.

including...

which can be found in the tech section index just by looking.

My next set will be Kenda.  I've had good experiences with Kenda in the wet and I'm on a tight budget.

If you have it to spend I'd definitely go with RC's recommendation.  I've used Pirelli MT66 and I loved them.  Best tires I ever had.

Try expanding your search beyond a week. I always forget to check that box.

In an environment like that I'd probably ask around and see what the locals are using.

This frustrated me to NO end for weeks until someone told me the default time frame was just 2 weeks.

Make sure you go back at least 6 months in order to get a good supply of info.

I'm happy with my Michelin Commander rear and Pilot Activ front. Many on this site recommend a Shinko as value for money.

I have a 2005 S40

Rear - Dunlop K555 140/80H15 $ 118
Front - Kenda K657 100/90H19 $ $60

Got them from Amazon and have Prime so no shipping.  So far no complaints from these. Both were rated really well.  Compared to the $160 for rear and $110 for front the dealer was trying to stick me with.

+1...I'll second that.  I've had very good experiences with Shinko.  Definitely a great value and good in the wet too.  I really prefer the look of the tread pattern on the Kenda tires though.

I have Kenda on the front and Pirelli on the rear. I'm not an aggressive rider or rainy weather rider, but these tires are about 6 months old and I have had no complaints.  Don't remember the exact model (bike at home...didn't ride today).

I did upgrade to the 140 90/15 for the rear and have no complaints. No rubbing or ill effects.

I'm really liking the Michelin Commander II's I just put on.  I don't have much to compare to on this particular bike since the only tires it's had are the stock IRC's which were already well aged when I got it (despite having plenty of tread).  I bought the bike May of 2014 with only 2700 miles in 6 years.

I went with the Shinko 140/90/15 rear, still got the IRC junker in the front (at 7200 miles)
I will go for the Pirelli for the front, and the Pirelli 130/90/15 rear next time, assuming I don't Cafe the bike or some such  ;D I think the Shinko is resisting tipping in (or maybe it's the IRC front)
140 is definitely more tire than a Savage needs IMO, and my bike squirms when I try to lean it very far (I don't remember if it did that with the original rear

The Shinko is wearing well, and has all the traction I need and then some, and sticks well in wet weather

Kenda Challengers on front and rear- have used for the last 20,000 miles plus.

I think it's a decent price/durability/performance compromise.  Usually one of the cheapest tires on Bikebandit and seems to work pretty well for me.

140/90/15 on rear.

(I accidently ordered a 110/90/19 for the front one time, so I went ahead and mounted it.  I kind of liked the look, (bigger tire) but it affected handling a little bit negatively, also I had to figure out how to raise the front fender a little bit.)

I went with IRC's like the originals. Guaranteed to fit. Haven't had any trouble on wet roads but I try to be extra careful when they're wet. I figure I'll go through 2 drive tires for every steer tire.

90/90-19 front and 130/90-15 rear will provide the best handling/turn in. Brand does not matter. It is a lightweight bike, you can get away with cheap tires and still get a good to great service life.

My 03 has a Shinko front and a very old (like 1994 coding) Dunlop Qualifier rear. 100 front, 140 rear, since those were what was on hand.

My 98 has an ancient (1970s) GS11 90/90-19 front and old (2000) 140/90-15 Cheng Shin rear. Those tires were on it when the electrical system decided it was made by Lucas and went poof...

And all of those old tires have at least 20K miles on them with usable tread left. Except the like new GS11, it has maybe 10 miles on it, bad tube.

Man, WD.  Do those old tires handle any good?  They get really hard after 6 or 7 years and the handling can be sketchy.
Stay safe, brother.

I still have original tires on my 03; they look prefect, still I decided to replace them;
Just got set of Shinko tourmaster 230's; stock front size and 130/90-15 rear; with tubes, rim tape came to about 150$. I will put them on myself (first time; never did that before....)
I figure for that cheap money its not worth worry about it..

Shinko tourmaster 130/90  rear gave me 8,000 miles! I have had Metzlers that  never surpassed that.  And the tourmaster is quiet.  I stayed away from Shinko for years because I thought the name sounded cheap.  Just stupid bias on my  part.  I also like the 712s and the 705 is perhaps the best all around tire in the world.  Just wish they made em  for a Savage.

Handle just fine.

I'm more concerned with the garbage electrical system or the pot metal shift linkage on a Savage than I am the age of its tires.
