Title: New windscreen?
Post by old_rider on 07/05/15 at 16:43:06

Ok, as you folks that were on the Texas run know.... I parked my bike on a downhill slope and didn't make sure it was in gear, and broke the windscreen.
I am going to lowe's or home depot tomorrow to get some plexi.... and this is my new pattern.... 36" wide by 18" tall... going to paint the backside black....

FOLd on center, cut out , symmetry.
Right now the right side flat next to the ear is a bit short, and a few other things don't quite line up, but a fold and cutting gets it done. I see a big
X-Acto knife.
Could just use the left side and flip it .
Naaah...

Usually plexiglass comes with a protective film and/or paper.
How are you planning on cutting?

I don't really give a squat about symmetry (flaws show character).... I am going to heat it and bend it a little (might beef it up with steel so it won't flex too bad), so you won't see the difference.

I made it "flat" and "stretched" it a bit left and right, so that it looks a bit "wide" in the middle, and it will cover my hands on a cold ( I have the horn type bars) windy day and still serve as a wind break for the main section.

I drew the curves by hand and will leave it "as is", and will probably make the cuts a bit different than the marks. I plan to use a dremmel with a textured cutting disk (grinding) on slow or medium speed so if it melts it I can still sand or razor blade it off.

Since I am painting the backside black I am thinking of adding some led lights to the edges to see what it will look like in the dark.. LOL..

Like Old Feller says in his software and computer posts.... "changes, they are a comin' "...... ;D

I can respect all of that.

Not sure if you are doing it for fun or function, or both, but I am all about doing something just to get people stirred up. When you are done, you need to set up a camera on your bike and then ride around slow and capture the responses and share with us. I am sure it'll be interesting.

It might be good for those points to be not so dangerous looking ! [smiley=lipsrsealed.gif]

Yeah, a buddy said I should "round" the points so the wind won't "whip" the ends around.

Why am I doing it? Just because....

My old windscreen broke and I still have the mounts, and plexi is semi-cheap.

I still might have to beef it up with metal strips, its all for fun.... i'm not designing a show bike :)

If it works out well.....maybe you could make a round, yellow, smiley face one for Serowbot!  :)

You know if you're ever hit in the head by a bat, you can't tell anyone, ..

Wowzers! went by Lowe's today, and its $59.99 for a 24" by 48" piece of plexiglass.... that is about 3/8's thick (or there bouts).

Not so sure I want to pay that, they do have an 18" by 24", but that would not be wide enough to cover the clutch and brake, for keepin' the cold wind off my knuckles.

I am now going to look around and see what I can find.... perhaps a window company could assist, or maybe there is a company that has scraps big enough.

I will have to do a bit of research.... back to the bat cave! ;D

I ran a plastics warehouse over thirty years ago. Plexiglass was high then.
Thomas registers lists manufacturers. Cadillac Plastics nearly always had what I needed, but higher.

They'll cut and polish edges...
Check with the local plastic pipe outfits. Irrigation supplies,
Lowe's, high, and I can't stand home depot, Haven't even walked in in over a year.
Might hafta call a sprinkler installation outfit and see where they buy timers, valves, heads, etc.
