Title: Help! Old and new together to make one.
Post by LS-Rich on 06/30/15 at 20:36:08

Hey guys.  Working on an 87 that the transmission went to crap in. It has a fresh top end. I also have a motor out of a 97 with a bad top end but a good bottom end. Anyone know if the top end off the 87 will fit with the 97 bottom. Will the charging system from the 87 fit into the 97 or do I even need to switch it? How about the starter.... Will the 87 work with the 97 bottom end?

It used to be my 87 (remember that long hill climbing looking machine) and I sold it to a buddy. He called the other day and said it was making a bunch of grinding noise and wouldn't shift. Anyway.... I checked it out and the transmission seems to be trashed. Not sure what happened or caused it. So...... I've had this 97 motor sitting in the parts pile for a while and I thought I'd try and get him going again with it.  Plan on using the whole top end, starter, and possibly the charging system from the 87 and back in the 87 bike. Hope all this makes sense. Thanks for any help you guys may give me.

yes, the 87 top will fit on the 97 bottom end.
you'll want to use the 87 rotor with the 87 cdi ignition unit due to timing.
