Title: Lost my belt.....ARG!
Post by raydawg on 06/29/15 at 16:30:55

I was driving it, pulling out onto the main drag, felt like I kicked her back into neutral, made a beeline to the shoulder.....
Sheared straight across, no real visible wear, looks like it happened gradually  if the threads exposed are any clue....

OK, where do I get a new one, I need it like right now, online. or a shop on the mainland (which are all closed on Mondays) ?????

You'll probably have to order one from an internet retailer.  They are pretty expensive as well, about $300.

Best regards,

I have an extra one......or two.

I have one that has no known history.....looks fine but I know nothing abut it.  $ 25 shipped.

I also have one that came on a 2001 with unkown miles on it.....looks fine as well.....$ 30 shipped.

I just take one of these on the Dragon trips in case anybody breaks one.

Either one of these will get you back on the road until you find a newer one with known history.

Dave

Thanks all for your help, really appreciated....

It looks like I'll cage a few days, right smack in time for a 2 to 3 hour ferry line to come home from work on the 3rd of July, dang it, this is why I learned/started to ride in the firstplace, goodness  >:(

I don't know if it matters, but I'd mark the direction of rotation.

Belt is in the mail.....USPS says it will arrive on Thursday.  However I would plan on Friday so you aren't disappointed. (If it does arrive on Thursday you can be pleasantly surprised instead).

Is this a cool site, or what?... 8-)...

It's an awesome site....

People really are wonderful if we put down the headlines and live life in the real.
To further the story, I had not been but minutes on the side of the road broke down when a can stopped. The guy and his wife asked if I needed help....
I had not even assessed what my options were yet, and my cell was about dead. He said for me to wait about 15 minutes for him to drop off his wife at home and to fetch his truck and trailer....
Sure enuff, he came back with his truck and flatbed trailer, even brought tie downs.
We pushed her up and he drove me the rest of the way home. Backed up my driveway and unloaded her  ;D ;D

I thanked him profusely

Not only that but while I waited at least 5 other cars/people stopped to check on me....

Sure,  I live on an island and some things are different, but people helping others and getting the satisfaction of doing a good deed never changes...

Thank you Dave, let me know the $$$$$ and how I get er' to you

I am at work presently and won't get home till after 4

Any tips on putting this guy on?

I guess I need to remove the rear tire, eh?

Title: Re: Lost my belt.....ARG!
Post by Dave on 06/30/15 at 18:28:41

You don't need to remove the rear tire - but you will need to remove the left shock and the belt covers to get the belt on.

You also have to remove the front pulley cover...and unfortunately the front pulley.  There is not enough room to get the belt off the pulley as the left engine cover is just too close.  This will be a bit of a problem as you don't have the belt on to use the normal method of holding the rear brake or lashing the rear wheel to a post....to hold the pulley from turning when you loosen the nut.  If you have an impact wrench it will be pretty easy to get off....if you still have the old belt wrap it around the pulley and use some big Channel Lock type pliers to keep the pulley from turning while you use the impact.

Once the front pulley is off you can (with the shock removed) place the belt over the rear pulley, and onto the front pulley, then slide the front pulley onto the shaft.

pull the pulley guard and belt guards.
remove pulley, this will be the hard part.
if you still have what's left of the belt, slip it onto the pulley.
pick a small socket with straight sides
put it on top of the pulley under the belt.
that should lock it in place while you crank on the pulley nut.
pull that side shock
raise rear wheel and pull axle
loosen adjusters
roll the wheel forward and you should be able to get the belt on.

No impact, still have the old belt.
Trying to grasp what you are saying versy, it just isn't registering.
Has anyone used a C clamp, wedging it against something while clamped to the pulley?

Straight, not tapered socket.
Get belt on, lay socket under the belt, against engine,
Clamp belt, down on the right, towards sidestand.
The lump will jam and stop the pulley and the belt will hold it.

Yep, ive been on other forums. I was rebuilding the top end on a Raptor.
Getting help and advice was difficult.
Pics, with arrows and labels, not just  socket,  Nine MM socket.
Now thats literally jamming.

Agreed, this place is one of the best little hangouts on the web.

That's ALL due to the people who come here.

You all have gotten me out of a couple jams in the few months I've owned my Savage, for which I am grateful.

Well poop and darn.....

As I stated earlier I ride because I must commute off the island to work, riding a ferry.
I get off work at 2:30PM. I get in my "cage"  cuz the belt issue, and head for the ferry, well I mean, I try to head for the ferry....
It was so backed up, the road down to the water, I knew something was up.
I really didn't think it was the holiday rush, that will be tomorrow, but I made the decision to drive around. On the north end of the island, about as far away as can be from my house,is a bridge. The only bridge.
If you want to see it, click on this link:

Found out one of the two ferries broke down.......dang.
I got off at 2:30 and home at 6, I need my bike  :-/

I might play hooky tomorrow, Friday I have off....

I'd be scared to take this bridge. TAKE THE FERRY! TAKE THE FERRY!

You guys are funny....

Only two hours today on the ferry, but the 85 degrees and no shade was a killer....

Dave, the belt was awaiting me, THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU....

It looks new, what the heck??????

You like some of raydawgs whidbey island smoked salmon?

The fish are not here yet, the best is late august/september. My boat is all ready to go, I should get a mess of them  ;D

Did you figured out why the original belt failed?  How long should one of those last as well?
