Title: K&N Drop-In (SU-6595) Air Filter Fitment?
Post by Digger on 06/20/15 at 17:34:39

Hello all,

Simple question:

Does the K&N cartridge ("drop-in") air filter (SU-6595 (http://www.knfilters.com/search/product.aspx?prod=SU-6595)) fit well with no air leaks?

I've done an extensive search here and cannot find enough data to answer this question to my satisfaction.

I see that Justin tried one a while back and found that it was letting dirt in around the seal.  A good data point, to be sure, but I need more of said data points...

I'm not interested in a discussion about the filtering ability of K&N air filters.  I'm not interested in a discussion about the price of K&N air filters.  I'm not interested in the performance impacts of K&N air filters.  These discussions have already been had on our forum.

I just need to know if I can expect a good seal out of the thing!

TIA!

That filter fit perfectly in my 2006. (I have been given to understand that there were no differences in the air box between the '01 and the '06, so it should fit perfectly in yours also.)   It even came with the bracket and screw in the box.

It did solve, with time and epoxy,,,
I still wish I hadn't. The filtration, hassle, cost, I just don't know if it's worth it.

The stock air filter has a skinny foam seal, whereas the K&N has a large rubber seal that you have to compress to get in at the back, then shove in when you screw in the front.  Got mine second hand so I don't know if it comes with a bracket.  But that's what you need, an L shaped bracket to pull in the seal and hold it in place.

OK, so far I see that only three people on here have any first-hand experience with the K&N cartridge filters.

Two of those three report some type of fitment problem.

Hmmm......

Didn't have a problem once a made a bracket which is what OI says it comes with now.

Thanks, Ver, for clarifying that point...I'd missed it!

Anyone else out there who has first-hand experience with the fitment of K&N cartridge-type air filters?

I've had one for years.  I got a piece of metal about an 1.5 inches long to hold the filter in place.  At least it secures the one side.  I use the hole where the OEM filter is secured.  I think I had it that way for 6 years...

Best regards,

Digger,
I have had mine for quite a few years now.  It did come with a bracket. The filter itself did not fit the airbox opening properly.  I had to trim a little off the top and add shims at the bottom to completely cover the airbox opening.  I would not purchase this filter again.
