Title: my speedo busted....
Post by runwyrlph on 06/17/15 at 16:44:39

No, not the swim suit (believe me, that's not something anybody ever wants to see)   :)

It was working fine when I switched to reserve today, cause I always check the odo and estimate mileage.  Got gas, and when I glanced down a couple miles later, it's not working.  No speedometer, no odometer.

The only thing i checked so far is that it is still connected at the crankcase end.

Is there a common point of failure anybody knows about?  I could get by ok without a speedometer, but I like having an odometer.

They have plastic drive gears. Some gauges last, some do not. The one on my 2003 only lasted a little over 16K miles.

You might check the angle drive on the back of the speedometer and see if that is what is broken.  I have a spare speedometer with 40,435 miles on it that works fine.  It is yours if you pay the shipping cost.

He sees me closing in on him on the mileage hall of fame thing, and then this. Something smells fishy to me!  :-/

haha mike! ,

... yeah it died at like 25,147 or something like that,  So I estimate i've ridden about 5,000 miles since then so, I'd put my total about 30K now, more or less.
;) :P

I finally took the 10 seconds last night to unscrew the cable... the little hickey that sticks down into the case is busted off of the cable, so I'm looking for a new cable.  (I do miss the odometer - i never know when I'm going to hit reserve now.)

Used to be able to get Speedo cables made. Just gotta have the cable and the gizmo to squeeze it square. I have no clue where to go to get that done now.

Mine worked itself loose at the speedometer end of the cable. I had to take the tank off and screw it back in

Buy yourself one of the Bell 100 bicycle speedo's ... you can reset odo tripmeter to see what miles you have. Cost is about $10 at wally world, and it is easy to install.

Thanks Dave, I appreciate it.

I saw one on Amazon that SAID it was for LS650 $14.99 + $6, but didn't look right and the review said it didnt work

I got a used one on the way from Yoshi already, hopefully I'll be clocking up the miles again pretty soon.

Just contact somebody building a RYCA....they don't use the stock speedo or cable anymore.

I am sure there are plenty of used cables just laying in boxes waiting for a new owner......you can watch the forum and see who is working on a RYCA or some other form of bobber/rat/cafe bike and contact them.
