Title: Neutral Light out, No start when kickstand down
Post by Ecyrb1018 on 06/17/15 at 15:04:00

I am a new owner of a 1996 Suzuki Savage. I knew there would be some maintenance that needed to be done which is fine but now that I tuned her up, I went out on my first ride and at the first stop I realized the light wouldn't come on. I rolled it and found neutral and when I put the kick stand down it died. The bike is running great now the only issue is I cannot start it to warm it up unless the kick stand is up. Any help with this would be great. I have read that there is a quick way to bypass this but I don't know if that's a good idea.

So, even though it was In Neutral putting the stand down killed it?

The neutral light won't come on, even in neutral?

Guys, if the bulb is blown, will that cause it?

Yes even when in neutral, putting the stand down kills it. The light doesn't come on at all but when I find neutral and the stand is up the bike fires right up.

Well....I looked at the wiring diagram, and I am not sure if the neutral light has to be in good shape for the system to operate.

The first thing to check is the neutral switch (blue wire to connector on right side of frame under fuel tank).....and while you have the tank off you can check the neutral light bulb.

The blue wire should test to be grounded when in neutral, and an open circuit when in any gear.

Have you ever seen it work?
Have you done anything to it?

The light is probably good but the bike isn't recognizing the transmission is in neutral.

Yeah, if ya don't have a volt/ohm meter , you're gonna need one. Harbor Freight, under ten bucks.

The side stand diode could have finally gone bad. If it did, the bike will never recognize a neutral condition and the neutral light wont come on.

I jumped the blue wire to a ground and the neutral light came on and bike started with kickstand down so it looks like I need a new neutral safety switch....does anyone know where to get one?

I'm sorry I don't have the answer, but I applaud your troubleshooting.

The switch in the engine might be fine.....the wire from the switch to the connector under the tank might have gone bad.  You might try splicing in a new wire.

The switch is a very rare failure. I don't remember one.
Where did you run the wire, that made it xgo.

I just disconnected it under the tank and ran a jumper to the closest ground and the neutral light came on and I was able to start it with the stand down.
