Title: speedometer cable
Post by strathken on 06/15/15 at 05:22:19

hi folks,
my speedometer worked until i unscrewed it to remove the tank.
when i reconnected it, it no longer works.
i have a notion something fell out, but i don't know what..
can someone tell me what that small part is/was..and where i would source another.    thanks.   strathken.

This may sound silly, but did you unscrew from the tranny case or the tank?  IIRC, there is a small shaft that is flat on one side that needs to go down in the hole correctly so the flat spots align.  I may be wrong, but that's my first recollection.  Haven't been in there in a while.

The old timers/wise ones will chime in shortly   ;) ;) ;)

There is a rubber seal under the one on the crank case.... it also has a slot to align it so it will "turn".

Take it back off and see if the rubber seal is there and then turn the cable until the slot lines up with the one in the case hole.

hello again,

i removed the cable again from the bottom of the engine case and i can see that there is definitely a piece missing. i have read before that when removing the cable a piece of tape should be placed over the end to stop something falling out. what that something is i don't know. i suppose i'll have to replace the whole thing since i don't know what it was that fell out. >:(

This link has a couple of photos that shows what things should look like.  The black O-ring in the photo is an addition to stop the leak...you should have the listed seal.

You may find that your cable has just pushed up inside the housing.  Mine did that to me one time.

hi guys,
sorry it's taken so long to get back to you all.
i went back out to suzy and removed the tank and speedo cable, now i am not the most organised person in the world. so, what i think has happened when i took it off last time is that i have removed the internal twirly bit and stored it somewhere in my hut, and now i've forgotten where it is and now can't find it. the good news is i have osdered a new one online for £8.95 including postage. no doubt when the new one arrives that when i'll find the old one. :P

That's when I always find a misplaced item too, right after the replacement arrives.

The internal twirly bit is essential... :-?...

Small internal twirly bits go in a baggie, taped to the speedo cable housing.
Just saying that you're not organized doesn't mean it has to be that way.
The time saved by being organized is more than the time saged by just tossing stuff here and there. I've organized a body shop and increased production, a plastics warehouse, decreased time locating parts, and the
"Yard " for an oilfield company. The time spent making sure you have the parts AND know how they go back together beats having a puzzle.
We have different length bolts on cases and head covers. A drawing on cardboard with an X stabbed at every bolt location and the bolt poked in saves headaches.
Notes, like, this bolt must be IN the headcover when it goes on
This on must be in place, upside down,

Time spent avoiding frustration,,, took me a while to learn that.

Ohh, ang get EVERYTHING  off a waterpump befORE you let them have the core... I'm pretty sure I got screwed there three times.
And never throw anything away during a project.
Baggies with duct tape, black sharpie, organize parts, coffe can, tons of ways, I even put bolts back in the hole afi remove something sometimes, that's usually car stuff, tho. Not bike.

If ii dont know exactly How something goes together, then I'm very careful about how it comes apart. How washers are stacked, maybe a string, tie them up, in order. If its a big job, cardboard on the bench, first parts off, back of the bench, Maybe some notes, last parts out, nearest me.

The first engine rebuild I was involved in, that was all i did was keep up with where stuff came from. Three or four eighteen year old guys, nobody knew hoot, but, the dude wanted to rebuild the motor, I don't think we even had the good sense to hone the cylinders. It ran just as crappy as before. It was a Matador,, it was supposed to be gutless.

Adding to Justin's excellent post:

If you have a digital camera take a pic of every step during disassembly.

When you attempt to put the bike back together you now know where everything goes.

My recent example: Got on this board, read about Raptor petcock, went over to Amazon... hey, lookee here, some of these are $20 something but here's one for $8.95 and free shipping! Ordered. Then read more on SS.com: don't buy the Chinese ones they leak and don't flow right... then got the Chinese shipping confirmation on my "Raptor" petcock, back to Amazon, ordered another one for $20 something with the OEM Yammy part number, that one arrived before the Chinese one and I installed it -- joy, joy, joy -- then the Chinese article arrived and joined the collection of items I refer to as "permanent garage decor"...  {X-o

my new speedo cable arrived today and i fitted it in about 15 minutes without a problem. the thing is, when i seen the twirly bit, i recognised it immediately..and i just know that that its neighbour is kicking about somewhere in my hut and i have no doubt i will stumble across it in the next few days. ;D
