Title: Bowl Vent Line Leaking Fuel
Post by zwspringer on 06/14/15 at 05:36:04

Hey guys. 15800 mi, last 1000 have been mine. It's got a Raptor and a
Versy adjuster, but nothing else unusual.

Situation is that it came time for the cam chain adjuster to be replaced, so
I did that. Finally have been able to get everything back together and then
tragedy. I switched the petcock to on and after a moment felt drops hitting
my leg. Looked around a bit and now I've got fuel leak coming from the bowl
vent tube on the left hand side of the bike. Any ideas why?

A piece of crud in the float valve, stuck maybe,
Rap on the carb with a screwdriver handle.

Drain the bowl into  clear container, see if its got crud..

How old is it?
And this is no big deal. Youll be fine.

It's probably the same stuff that was on it in '96. The guy who had it before
me was kinda terrible.

Just for clarification, when I say "Fuel leak" I'm talking about as much fuel coming out of the hose as is physically possible...not just a dribble.

Update: drained the bowl like you said, some white gunky stuff that kinda looked like mucus was in there. Unfortunately, the screw won't tighten back into it, so there's another problem.

That white crap is the result of our wonderful ethanol filled gasoline... Lovely stuff isn't it?

If you pulled the screw out, put itup to a light, make sure you havent messed upthe threads, the very first one is critical. repair with small triangle file if necessary.
hold it up in place , turn backwards, till you feel a click.Thats when the threads line up.

Fingertips, small screwdriver.
Maybe clear threads, shoot Berymans up in those threads.
If it's not wanting to play fair, you may have messed it up.
You should probably pull the carb, get the JIS tools, pull the bowl, maybe chase the threads. I dunno if they go through. If so, from inside the bowl, run a good screw down, reshaping the threads. If not, a tap, BUT, be careful to Not cut new threads, its really important to just recreate the original threads.

First thing I did was check the screw threads, they seemed Okay to me. I'll check again.

The reverse rotation,click, serious help.
I. Use that with plastic all the time.

Had a chance to check out that screw a little more closely and got a good
reminder of who owned it before me.

First of all, it's a torx. I could be wrong, but I don't think that's what it
ought to be.

Second, and more importantly, I realized that it wasn't even the right
size. You can push it in and out for goodness sake. Dude must have
glued the thing in there or something.

Third, it is cut at the end. The threads must have been filed, because
they're good, but you can tell that it isn't all it used to be.

If I just take out the four screws at the bottom can I just take the bowl off and check things, or will that complicate things further?

If they have been in, never removed, you'll play the dickens getting them.
Start by dosing them with the 50/50 acetone and transmission fluid penetrating oil for a coupla days, get JIS tips , antisieze , and, best to go back with SS Allen heads.Try , but don't be surprised if you need to pull the carb.

Anybody have the actual size of the bowl drain plug by chance?
