Hey guys/gals, new to the forum and the Savage itself.

Recently picked up an '04 that's been bobbed. First thing I did is what most here agree is a mandatory petcock swap.

Now I'm looking for the next piece, a new gauge assembly. Preferably something with a fuel gauge integrated. I've been looking around and my option seems to be something with a digital display.

Anybody go that route? and if so, we're you able to get one that fits the stock gauge spot?

I think you'd be the first to integrate a fuel gauge to the S40. It's more complicated than it looks.

Well, I've had the bike for about 3 weeks and after running out of gas twice, it's a necessary next step to look into.

My main concern is if I can't find a gauge to fit into the stock placement on the tank, how to go about filling that hole in

If you ride on reserve, it quits and you walk.
Just put gas in about every 100 miles.
It's easy.

Yeah, I drove it until I got to the 100-mark on the speedometer and filled it up the 1st time. Now, whenever it hits that mark or gets close, I fill up the tank.

The guy I bought my Savage from said he'd been considering drilling two holes in the tank. One near the top, one near the bottom, both on one side of the tank. Then adding some fittings and putting a section of clear fuel line between the two. Then the fuel level could be seen from the outside of the tank.

Personally, I'm glad he never got around to it, and I just refill the tank every two days running back and forth to work. That's a 43 mile round trip, do two and refill. Or, like others have said, refill every 100 miles. About the same.

Looks a little scary to me. I'd hate to lay the bike down, rip off a plastic fuel hose and burn the bike (and me!) to the ground.

I have a 1 liter fuel bottle that I use when going out of town.

pgambr: Excellent idea but 1L is equal to about 1/4 gallon. That's probably about the equivalent of our reserve I would think. Every little bit helps if you don't have to push! :D

Before I put on a raptor pet, the original one really didn't have much if any of a reserve capacity. I'm not sure why, so I'm always a bit cautious. It gives a little cushion so to speak.
